The Fujigoko region encircling the northern foot of Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, five lakes formed by past eruptions that offer classic reflected views of the volcano across still winter water. Lake Yamanaka is known locally as “Swan Lake”: whooper swans winter here in good numbers directly in front of Mount Fuji, along with other overwintering wildfowl, with the swans-&-volcano combination the defining wildlife image of the area.
