An Ice Covered Grizzly Bear Of The Yukon Typical Of The Kind Of Image That May Be Captured On The NaturesLens Ice Bears Of The Yukon Photographic Holiday

Ice Grizzlies of Bear Cave Mountain Photography Holiday

Join NaturesLens on a wild Canadian adventure, travelling into the depths of Yukon wilderness to capture unrivalled images of the native grizzly bear as it feeds on spawning salmon in the Fishing Branch River. The specific conditions & sub-zero temperatures in & around this river transforms grizzlies into ice bears, as their fur becomes frozen & frosted; completely changing their appearance as photography subjects.

Only a fortunate few can witness this spectacle annually, & the unique nature of this wildlife photography experience means that we can only offer at most 3 places on this trip, typically only 2, so booking early is essential.

NaturesLens invites wildlife photography enthusiasts on a journey to a national park in the Yukon region, Canada’s wildest & most unspoilt territory, to capture awe-inspiring images of the native grizzly bears as they feed on spawning salmon. This natural wonder only occurs for six weeks of the year, so the lucky few who get to witness this event will take home memories to treasure for years to come.

The location for this wildlife photography holiday lies within a snowball’s throw of the Arctic Circle in the Fishing Branch Protected Area, where the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation & the regional government have joined hands to set aside 2,500 sq. miles of pristine wilderness as Yukon’s largest territorial park.

An Ice Covered Grizzly Bear Of The Yukon Typical Of The Kind Of Image That May Be Captured On The NaturesLens Ice Grizzlies of Bear Cave Mountain Photographic Holiday

The season to witness this phenomenon is short, just six weeks long, in which the grizzlies gather to feast on the spawning salmon. Their feeding behaviour is intense during this period as they are attempting to put on enough weight to last them through their hibernation in nearby limestone caverns over the winter months & the Fishing Branch River is the key to it all.

Fed by underground springs, it remains unfrozen all year round, & every autumn 35,000 chum salmon make the 1,500-mile odyssey from the Bering Sea to spawn in its pure waters. At times there are so many fish in the river you feel you could walk across it on their backs without getting your feet wet.

The salmon, in turn, attract the grizzlies, as many as 40 every season & as they wade through the river an extraordinary transformation takes place. Within minutes their wet fur freezes in the sub-zero temperatures & they become ice bears to the delight of wildlife photographers.

Being allowed into the park is a rare privilege, as the region is very sacred to the indigenous Vuntut Gwitchin communities who reside in the area, & put great ancestral & cultural value on the land & the environment within the park. The 2500sq miles which make up the park was set aside by the government & local communities as an area for preservation, & the opportunity to capture its rarely disturbed wildlife population on camera is not one to miss out on. A guide with in-depth knowledge of the wildlife & culture of the Yukon national park will lead you throughout the experience to aid you in obtaining editorial-quality images that truly convey the magic of this exceptional wildlife spectacle.

An offshore island so remote it feels like you are entering a community far removed from the rest of the world, Fair Isle is owned by the National Trust for Scotland, a jewel protected by soaring craggy cliffs, one moment bathed in sunshine the next topped by a crown of brooding fog.

Dramatic & untouched, our Shetland’s Puffins of Fair-Isle wildlife photography trip sets the scene for images so atmospheric; they are nothing short of mesmerising.

Posing with a gathered flower, one of Fair ISle's Puffins looks in a contemplative mood - photographed on the NaturesLens Shetland's Puffins of Fair-Isle Photographic Holiday

With just 70 islanders inhabiting Fair-Isle, the world famous bird population far outnumbers the island’s human caretakers. An internationally renowned bird observatory, Fair Isle’s tiny status – just 3 km wide & barely 5 km long – gives little hint to the world class seabird colony & migration research that goes on here.

Once home to Viking warlords, there is now no better place to experience Puffins up close than Fair Isle. In winter the hilly terrain is covered in snow & ice, in spring & summer blanketed in flowers. The puffins adapt accordingly, nesting in burrows & squeezing into crevices in the cliffs. The colony is naturally most active in early morning, virtually guaranteeing optimal lighting for nature photography.

Guided by a member of the NaturesLens guiding team, the NaturesLens Shetland’s Puffins of Fair-Isle photography trip offers an opportunity to add the distinctive brightly coloured bill & puffy cheeks of the Puffin to your photography portfolio.

The stated trip cost includes accommodation on Fair Isle on a full board basis, flight from Sumburgh to Fair Isle & ferry back from the island to Sumburgh. The itinerary is flexible in between the puffin sessions to allow you to photograph other species of birds such as Skua or go off on your own to explore the rest of the island.

With beds provided inside, you have the freedom to use this hide at your leisure, gaining unrivalled exposure to the wildlife & their behaviours at night.

Camera & Lens Recommendations:

Cropped Sensor:

In general, a 500mm lens can prove too much. The ideal lens would be 300mm + 1.4x converter or/and 100-400mm f5.6 Canon or 200-400mm f4 Nikon, Nikon 80-400mm f5,6.

Full frame sensor:

In general 500mm, but optimal would be 400mm plus 1.4x converter or 300mm with 1.4x and 2x converter. Very good lens for full frame would also be a 70-200mm f2.8 plus 1.4x converter.

Clothing:

  • Thin neutral coloured t-shirts & blouses.
  • Neutral coloured trousers.
  • Hat (a safari style hat with a broad rim all around the edge is best).

Dotty looks back, she is one of the new mothers of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve captured during the NaturesLens Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photography Holiday

The magnificent Indian tiger, a creature so majestic & elusive, which has been suffering as a result of illegal poaching to the point of becoming an endangered species. NaturesLens invites you to experience these beautiful creatures first hand within beautiful & mysterious Indian parkland, in a reserve famed for having the highest density of Tigers in India. The landscape offers dense jungle environments & grassland intertwined with narrow tracks that you will navigate whilst capturing stunning images. You will encounter a range of other native species on the trip, such as leopards, Indian gaurs, langur monkeys & sloth bears as well as an array of beautifully colourful birds.

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in a region of India steeped in complex history, with evidence of the political past of the area lying in ruins & monuments within the park.

Our Tigers of Bandhavgarh stands out from the crowd, as we have carefully organised the schedule to allow for an optional full day’s safari in private gypsies (jeeps). Unlike the public, who are restricted to 3hr sessions in the park in the morning & afternoon, you will benefit from earlier entry & later exit, & an entire day within the park without having to leave, to ensure that you are able to make the most of the tiger photography opportunities at times when the park is quietest.

Many wildlife photography tours in these environments cram 3 or more clients into one gypsy, forcing individuals to lean over each other to take photographs, compromising the quality of the images & the experience for individuals. However, we have ensured that only 2 guests travel in each gypsy, giving you maximum freedom of movement to capture images from the optimum angle, & space to keep you comfortable as you experience the wonders of the park over the course of the day. Photography tuition will be provided as needed, with knowledgeable wildlife guidance provided by a team of local experts. You can read Jayne’s report from the 2017 Indian Wildlife Photography Holidays on our blog.

Our guests are also housed in super accommodation on a full board basis, providing you with comfort & excellent hospitality when you return later on in the evening to relax, unwind, & reflect on events of the day. We have designed this tour to maximise time in the park spent spotting & capturing editorial quality photographs of tigers, whilst minimising travel time. With this in mind, airport transfers, jeep fees & park fees are also included in the cost of the tour, making things simple for you so that you can focus on making the most of your wildlife photography experience.

  • Sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Bandana (to protect your nose and mouth from dust).
  • Sensible shoes or boots for safari.
  • Flip flops or easy shoes for the lodge.
