The African bushveld is an environment famed for its variety in wildlife, & the unique safari experience it can provide for wildlife photography enthusiasts. Join NaturesLens on an African wildlife experience, delving deep into sub-tropical bushland; photographing incredible native species from both jeep & specially designed hides which are embedded within the landscape.

A low level image of a rhino, typical of those that may be captured at Zimanga Game Reserve during the NaturesLens African Wildlife of Zimanga Photography Holiday

This is a trip you’ll never forget, & will have you leaving with both stunning images & memories which you will treasure for a lifetime. Places are limited so make sure to book early to avoid missing out.

NaturesLens invites amateur & semi-professional photographers on an African wildlife adventure which will take you into the heart of African bushveld environments, photographing a wide range of native species including impressive predators; such as leopards, wild dogs & cheetahs, as well as magnificent elephants & over 400 bird species. The photography safaris & hide sessions all take place within a pristinely preserved wildlife reserve, which provides the animals with a protected habitat while allowing photographers to come & observe these animals thrive, & capture awe-inspiring images.

A low level image of a herd of elephant, typical of those that may be captured at Zimanga Game Reserve during the NaturesLens African Wildlife of Zimanga Photography Holiday

This South African wildlife reserve offers 6000 hectares of pristinely maintained sub-tropical bushveld, fever tree forests & hilly terrain. The animals live side by side in an almost self-contained ecosystem, with both predators & prey relying on this environment to survive. This is the first reserve of its kind; one which has been specially designed for photographers, while allowing the animals to live as naturally as they would in the wild with some added protection.

Our trip offers you five traditional game viewing drives from open safari vehicles, with no more than two photographers per row to ensure maximum comfort & access to the best angles for photography. These are not limited to tracks so that off-roading will give you maximum photography opportunities. You will also have at your disposal a range of water-level hides, which are correctly positioned to capture images of the animals at their eye-level. These hides have been created with the photographer in mind, providing the optimum structure & positioning throughout the park.

An image of a pair of rhino at the night hide waterhole typical of those that may be captured at Zimanga Game Reserve during the NaturesLens African Wildlife of Zimanga Photography Holiday

One way glass means you will be invisible to the animals, enabling you to photograph their entirely natural behaviour within the reserve environment. You will also benefit from the solar-powered air conditioning & comfortable interiors within the hides; included to make your wildlife experience as comfortable & enjoyable as possible.

Two birdbath hides in the heart of the reserve offer you the opportunity to photograph the wide variety of bird species which inhabit the region, including the pink-throated twinspot, kingfishers, barbets & mousebirds to name a few. Not only this, but these hides may also give you the opportunity to photograph other visiting species, such as warthog, banded mongoose & monkeys.

Another photography hide is provided for overnight use which you will use for two nights, providing you with a completely different experience of the reserve, observing a variety of species as they carry out their night time activities. With beds provided inside, you have the freedom to use this hide at your leisure, gaining unrivalled exposure to the wildlife & their behaviours at night.

Accommodation & internal transport is included within the price of the trip to keep things simple for you & NaturesLens will provide photography tuition as needed. This is a trip you will never forget- book now to avoid disappointment!

The price of this photography holiday is £3749 per person. Group size is limited to a small number of clients; this ensures that Pui Hang Miles, one of the NaturesLens co-Founders, can give one-to-one tuition if requested.

SINGLE SUPPLEMENT

No single supplement is available for our African wildlife trip due to the nature of the accommodation in the Doornhoek homestead.

ACCOMMODATION DETAILS

At the homestead, meals are provided & prepared by an in-house chef.  Depending on the weather, meals can either be served in the dining area or on the outside deck.

While we stay at the homestead, we have been able to design our itinerary regarding time-slots for activities, this is flexible, meaning that we can extend drives into the night to follow predators, or get up extra early for a session at the nearby scavenger’s hide.

During the daytime, you will be able to relax in the beautiful rim-flow pool offering sweeping views over Zimanga & the distant Lebombo mountains, & at night the fireplace with comfortable seating makes it an ideal location to enjoy a glass of wine from a wide selection, with the wide-open African skies & a small fire keeping our group company.

The range of bird species which thrive in Calera are a sight to behold. From the Little Owl to Black & Griffon Vultures, their characteristics & common behaviours are diverse, but they all live side by side making up a large proportion of the delicate local ecosystem which exists in this region. Birds can provide some of the most exciting wildlife photography opportunities, as their quick, unpredictable behaviour keeps us on our toes & enables captivating movement & in-flight imagery to be captured.

Our 9-day excursion to Calera offers individuals opportunities to photograph a huge range of native species, including the Bee Eater, Little Owl, Great & Little Bustard, Black & Griffon Vultures, Lesser & Common Kestrel, Hoopoe, & the Black Winged Kite, as well as many others. We offer an all-inclusive accommodation & meal package to ensure that all you need to worry about is taking unique & mesmerising photographs.

A hoopoe comes in to land showing off the crest which is the trademark feature of these birds photographed on the NaturesLens Birds of Calera Photography Holiday

Sunrise & sunset are often considered the prime times of day for creative photography, so unlike other holidays & tours, we ensure that our photography sessions make the most of these times of day. This provides unrivalled exposure to the variety of species & the environment which inhabit this region.

NaturesLens provides 7 days packed with hide sessions, & on most days you will have the opportunity to use different hides in the morning & afternoon to photograph different species. This trip works on a rotation basis, so that each member of the group gets the opportunity to take photographs from a variety of hides. The region is home to a wide range of Iberian Southern European specialities, & we will do our best to tailor your schedule to one that is personalised to you, if you make us aware of your target species.

The freedom we provide with the times of day for photography is important, as many of these bird species are very wary & cautious around humans, & it may therefore be necessary to arrive under the cover of darkness. It will also be advisable to approach slowly, & keep noise at a minimum whilst in the hides so as not to startle the birds, as well as to optimise your chances of photographing the birds whilst they are unaware of your presence.

The weather can vary between different times of day in this region at this time of year, so we advise that you bring layers & prepare from somewhat unpredictable weather conditions. Join NaturesLens for a wildlife photography experience you will never forget. Places are limited, so book today!

A Golden Eagle perches whilst bathed in the golden light of the setting sun photographed during the NaturesLens Spanish Raptors Photography Holiday

The Sierra Morena is the longest-reaching mountain range in Spain, making up a formidable barrier protecting the fusion of culture & wildlife which lies north of the mountains from the harsh Atlantic winds coming from the south. This combined with low tourist numbers has protected the area from damage & degradation, maintaining an unspoilt natural environment & allowing native & migratory species to thrive.

Your base throughout the 8 day Spanish Raptors Photography Holiday will be a small village, offering peace & quiet & traditional local culture & food for you to enjoy. Your photography will benefit from unrivalled access to 5 separate hides, placed strategically within the landscape to provide optimum opportunity to photograph a range of species including the common Kestrel, Spanish Imperial Eagle & the Golden Eagle.

An additional drinking pool hide offering excellent positioning to capture images of a range of migratory birds coming to rest at this location.

Dotty looks back, she is one of the new mothers of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve captured during the NaturesLens Bengal Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photography Holiday

The magnificent Indian tiger, a creature so majestic & elusive, which has been suffering as a result of illegal poaching to the point of becoming an endangered species. NaturesLens invites you to experience these beautiful creatures first hand within beautiful & mysterious Indian parkland, in a reserve famed for having the highest density of Tigers in India. The landscape offers dense jungle environments & grassland intertwined with narrow tracks that you will navigate whilst capturing stunning images. You will encounter a range of other native species on the trip, such as leopards, Indian gaurs, langur monkeys & sloth bears as well as an array of beautifully colourful birds.

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in a region of India steeped in complex history, with evidence of the political past of the area lying in ruins & monuments within the park.

Our Bengal Tigers of Bandhavgarh stands out from the crowd, as we have carefully organised the schedule to allow for an optional full day’s safari in private gypsies (jeeps). Unlike the public, who are restricted to 3hr sessions in the park in the morning & afternoon, you will benefit from earlier entry & later exit, & an entire day within the park without having to leave, to ensure that you are able to make the most of the tiger photography opportunities at times when the park is quietest.

Many wildlife photography tours in these environments cram 3 or more clients into one gypsy, forcing individuals to lean over each other to take photographs, compromising the quality of the images & the experience for individuals. However, we have ensured that only 2 guests travel in each gypsy, giving you maximum freedom of movement to capture images from the optimum angle, & space to keep you comfortable as you experience the wonders of the park over the course of the day. Photography tuition will be provided as needed, with knowledgeable wildlife guidance provided by a team of local experts. You can read Jayne’s report from the 2017 Indian Wildlife Photography Holidays on our blog.

Dotty looks back, she is one of the new mothers of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve captured during the NaturesLens Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photography Holiday

NaturesLens offers you an unparalleled opportunity within Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Following your arrival at your luxurious lodging in Bandhavgarh, you will spend six full-days, from before dawn to after dusk, making the most of opportunities to capture images of the magnificent Bengal Tiger as individuals & family groups thrive within a protected national park.

Open to both amateur & semi-professional wildlife photographers, our Ultimate Tiger Safari photography holiday has been designed to offer guests unparalleled opportunities to photograph these amazing big cats within the national park, while also looking out for other native species such as the Indian gaur & langur monkeys.

Refined, using personal experience gained through visits to the reserve over the past 6 years, our trip includes full board accommodation in luxury cottages within a wonderful wildlife lodge; plus all jeep fees, all park fees & airport transfers to make things as straightforward for you as possible. Our 8 night/9 day photography holiday is designed to ensure that you can make the most of this fantastic wildlife photography experience.

Where this trip differs from our regular trips to Bandhavgarh, is that our standard offerings include twelve safaris, made up of two four-hour safaris over each of six days in a specific zone of the reserve; instead, for this, our Ultimate Bengal Tiger Safari, on each of the six days, we enter Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve fifteen minutes before other visitors, have the opportunity to spend the entire day in the Tiger Reserve, & leave fifteen minutes later than every other vehicle. Additionally, we will have access to all the core zones & all safari routes within the Tiger Reserve. The structure of this photography holiday means that you will typically have the opportunity to track tigers all day long, from zone to zone, for up to fifteen hours at a time – for this reason, we believe this to be the Ultimate Bengal Tiger Safari photography holiday!

Also of note, our jeep drivers have decades of experience within the Tiger Reserve, they know the area intimately, can spot tigers in an uncanny fashion & will strive to get you the best photographic opportunities.
Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is famed for having the highest density of Tigers in India, & its landscape offers dense jungle environments & open grassland intertwined with narrow tracks that you will navigate while capturing stunning images. You will encounter a range of other native species during the safaris, such as leopards, gaur, langur monkeys & sloth bears as well as an array of beautifully colourful birds.

Many wildlife photography tours to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve place three or more people into one jeep, forcing individuals to lean over each other to take photographs, therefore compromising the quality of the images & the experience for individuals. At NaturesLens, we ensure that only two guests travel in each jeep, giving you maximum freedom of movement to capture images from the optimum angle, as you experience the wonders of the park over the course of the day. Photography tuition will be provided as needed by David, with expert wildlife guidance supplied by a pairing of a local naturalist & guide in each jeep.

Our accommodation is exquisite; each guest is housed in a beautiful cottage within a luxurious lodge, on a full board basis; we have stayed at this lodge many times during the past 6 years, we guarantee that you will be provided excellent hospitality when you return from the game drives to relax, unwind, & look over your images.

We have designed this 8 night photography holiday to maximise time in the park spent spotting & capturing editorial quality photographs of tigers while minimising travel time. With this in mind, airport transfers, all jeep fees & park fees are also included in the cost of the tour, making things simple for you so that you can focus on making the most of your wildlife photography experience.

Camera & Lens Recommendations:

Cropped Sensor:

In general, a 500mm lens can prove too much. The ideal lens would be 300mm + 1.4x converter or/and 100-400mm f5.6 Canon or 200-400mm f4 Nikon, Nikon 80-400mm f5,6.

Full frame sensor:

In general 500mm, but optimal would be 400mm plus 1.4x converter or 300mm with 1.4x and 2x converter. Very good lens for full frame would also be a 70-200mm f2.8 plus 1.4x converter.

Clothing:

  • Thin neutral coloured t-shirts & blouses.

Lake Kerkini, situated in northern Greece, not far from the border with Bulgaria, is the setting for our Dalmatian Pelican Photography Workshop – in winter, Lake Kerkini, is the most important place in Europe for the globally threatened Dalmatian Pelican, additionally the lake is a noted haunt of the rare Spotted Eagle. NaturesLens have arranged for the clients to venture, using boats, out on to the lake itself, it is expected therefore that clients will be able to enjoy incredible close encounters with the magnificent Dalmatian Pelicans, many of which should be sporting full breeding plumage at this time of year.
