A bald eagle flies over a river in the valleys of the Pacific Northwest

The rivers of Washington on the Eastern coast of the United States runs through some of North America’s most dramatic scenery; the forests are home to diverse wildlife species, including the Bald Eagle, the rivers provide a fantastic spawning habitat for salmon. It is the only large river system in Washington that contains healthy populations of all five native salmon species & two species of trout.

NaturesLens invites mid-level & experienced wildlife photographers to participate in a new photography holiday, which involves navigating the waterside territory around Concrete, Washington, by boat, to photograph the population of bald eagles that winter in the area.

A bald eagle flies over a river in the valleys of the Pacific Northwest

We have chosen this location carefully to present another opportunity for a fantastic bald eagle photography experience. The areas we will use on the Skagit River are home to nearly 1000 eagles as they feed on the abundant supply of spawning chum salmon. Throughout the duration of this photography holiday, you will be presented with many chances to capture images of the eagles in flight & in their environment, providing for you the opportunity to capture both wide-angle pictures & up-close.

Join NaturesLens on a photography experience that offers opportunities to fill your photography portfolio with images of the bald eagle. Based in the town of Concrete, Skagit County, we will venture out every day on boats to capture stunning photographs of the bald eagle.

A pair of bald eagles fight for food over the bank of a river in the valleys of the Pacific Northwest

We intend making use of both the Skagit & Nooksack Rivers, both of which are different from one & other, both offering fantastic views of both the majestic eagles & beautiful scenery. The eagle is the national bird of the USA for a reason; they are strong, majestic & impressive, the ultimate predator of the sky, making them the perfect subject for adventurous wildlife photographers. Coupled to the dramatic landscapes that border the river, there is a very photogenic setting, the bald eagles & other wildlife makes for some unique photographic opportunities.

A bald eagle perched in a tree in one of the valleys of the Pacific Northwest

Throughout the trip you will have abundant opportunities to capture images of bald eagles perched in the trees, diving & fighting for fish, or soaring overhead as they scour the ground below for their next meal. A guide from NaturesLens will offer photography guidance whilst on the boats, enabling you to capture both close up shots, highlighting their beady eyes & dramatic features, & wide-angle shots which take in eagles alongside other bird species within the outstanding landscape which surrounds them.

A pair of bald eagles squabble over the bank of a river in the valleys of the Pacific Northwest

The schedule for this trip has been designed to allow you to make the most of the photography opportunities available in the area. This includes 5 days of photography sessions specifically targeting bald eagles on the Skagit & Nooksack Rivers, with guidance available to help you tailor your technique to obtain the best images within a challenging environment. The river supports one of the largest wintering bald eagle populations in the continental United States. The eagles feed on Chum & Coho salmon that have returned to spawn in the Skagit & its tributaries. The eagles arrive in late October or early November & stay into February. The sight of hundreds of birds perched in trees that line the river waiting for their chance to catch fish is truly remarkable.

For one day during the trip, you will be presented with opportunities to capture some of the best images of the fantastic landscapes of North Cascades, led by a local photographer, who has been photographing the North Cascades for nearly thirty years. Our local guide will lead you to some of his favourite winter locations in the vast wilderness of conifer-clad mountains, glaciers & lakes. Every opportunity will enable you to capture a facet of this alpine landscape.

Your photography holiday includes transfers between Seattle Tacoma Airport & Concrete, all transfers during the trip, 6 full days photography on the Skagit & Nooksack rivers, & accommodation for 7 nights on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis in the Concrete area of Washington state.
Join NaturesLens for on a unique photography excursion into the wilderness of North America, capturing beautiful images of the impressive bald eagle as it thrives in its picturesque natural habitat. We can only offer a select few people this opportunity each year, so book early to avoid missing out.

David Miles, our photography guide will lead you through out, providing tuition as needed & helping you develop your skills. He will help you shoot these birds in wide & close up shots; capturing them in movement whilst feeding & fighting for fish, interacting with each other or in flight with the impressive backdrop provided by the rivers & surrounding snow-capped mountains.

Our group numbers are strictly limited to allow for the highest quality experience for everyone involved, & as this photography is seasonal we can only offer this trip to a small number of lucky individuals each year. Book early to avoid disappointment!

The price for this photography holiday is £2999 per person. Group size is up to 3 clients, this ensures that David Miles, our NaturesLens Guide, can give a one-to-one tuition if requested.

Dotty looks back, she is one of the new mothers of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve captured during the NaturesLens Bengal Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photography Holiday

The magnificent Indian tiger, a creature so majestic & elusive, which has been suffering as a result of illegal poaching to the point of becoming an endangered species. NaturesLens invites you to experience these beautiful creatures first hand within beautiful & mysterious Indian parkland, in a reserve famed for having the highest density of Tigers in India. The landscape offers dense jungle environments & grassland intertwined with narrow tracks that you will navigate whilst capturing stunning images. You will encounter a range of other native species on the trip, such as leopards, Indian gaurs, langur monkeys & sloth bears as well as an array of beautifully colourful birds.

Bandhavgarh National Park is located in a region of India steeped in complex history, with evidence of the political past of the area lying in ruins & monuments within the park.

Our Bengal Tigers of Bandhavgarh stands out from the crowd, as we have carefully organised the schedule to allow for an optional full day’s safari in private gypsies (jeeps). Unlike the public, who are restricted to 3hr sessions in the park in the morning & afternoon, you will benefit from earlier entry & later exit, & an entire day within the park without having to leave, to ensure that you are able to make the most of the tiger photography opportunities at times when the park is quietest.

Dotty walks out of the grassland of one of Bandhavgarh's meadows captured during the NaturesLens Bengal Tigers of Bandhavgarh Photography Holiday

Many wildlife photography tours in these environments cram 3 or more clients into one gypsy, forcing individuals to lean over each other to take photographs, compromising the quality of the images & the experience for individuals. However, we have ensured that only 2 guests travel in each gypsy, giving you maximum freedom of movement to capture images from the optimum angle, & space to keep you comfortable as you experience the wonders of the park over the course of the day. Photography tuition will be provided as needed by David Miles, with knowledgeable wildlife guidance provided by a team of local experts. You can read a report from the 2017 Indian Wildlife Photography Holidays on our blog.

Our guests are also housed in exquisite accommodation on a full board basis, providing you with comfort & excellent hospitality when you return later on in the evening to relax, unwind, & reflect on events of the day. We have designed this tour to maximise time in the park spent spotting & capturing editorial quality photographs of tigers, whilst minimising travel time. With this in mind, airport transfers, jeep fees & park fees are also included in the cost of the tour, making things simple for you so that you can focus on making the most of your wildlife photography experience.

You will stay in a hired cottage, which will provide you with comfort & convenience so that you can focus on obtaining photographs that you will cherish for years to come. You will benefit from Sean’s guidance from before sunrise to after sunset, he will work with you to convey techniques that ensure that you leave with some stunning images captured throughout the days on the beach. The cottage we use is located very close to the beach & dunes, which are used by the seals, this ensures excellent viewpoints from which to capture them on camera as they rest & interact with one another.

Wildlife photography of the Atlantic grey seal population, has been a contentious issue in recent years, & therefore ethical & respectful photography practices are necessary to ensure that the seals & the environment do not come to any harm. NaturesLens have put together this photography holiday with issues of sustainability & animal welfare in mind by designing a schedule which allows wildlife enthusiasts to experience the seals first-hand & capture impressive photographs, all the while being mindful of their welfare & what precautions are necessary in order to protect their natural habitat.

There will be two main photography sessions per day; one early session from before the sun comes up & the second taking place in the late afternoon & evening as the sun goes down, both giving you the chance to make the most of varied lighting & tidal conditions with your photography. Our unique & private accommodation provides the opportunity for an ethical approach to photographing the Atlantic grey seal colonies without compromising the welfare of these iconic mammals.

At all times, Sean, your photography leader will guide you during the photography activities & will be mindful of the seals, preventing any disturbance of the animals by keeping at a safe distance from both adults & pups, whilst using longer lenses to capture the best possible images.

This holiday includes 5 nights accommodation in a gorgeous cottage on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis, your meals will be warming, homely & plentiful to get you warmed through & filled up after a long day on the beach. Numbers are limited to ensure that the trip is sustainable, ethical & enjoyable for every photographer, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment!
