A solitary Dalmatian Pelican floats serenely on the milky lake - photographed by Richard Coles during the 2016 NaturesLens Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday

This is, I think, the last series of Dalmatian Pelican images captured by clients on the January 2016 Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holidays, Richard Coles attended the second trip, that was lead by Richard Peters. It appears that Richard & the guests were blessed with mirror-like stillness on the lake for at least one of the mornings – resulting in some great captures as shown below, but first, above you can see one of Richard Coles’ images in the style that I personally like best, the ‘ethereal shot’, executed beautifully with the viewer’s eye being drawn to that flash of orange & the eye of the bird peeking out from it’s ‘crazy hairdo’. A Dalmatian Pelican at dawn - photographed by Bob Pietrowski during the 2016 NaturesLens Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday

These came from Bob Pietrowski, who was on the tour that I had the pleasure of leading.

The way that the pelicans appear to waterski upon landing never ceases to amuse me & Bob caught the moment superbly.

Dalmatian Pelican photographed by Jayne Bond during the 2016 NaturesLens Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday

We are pleased to announce that booking is open for the 2017 season & since we started running this photography trip the event has expanded to include three full days of photography! Plus we do try to fit in one or two additional shoreline feeds to boost your portfolio of dalmatian pelican images.

Book here for January 12, 2017 – January 16, 2017 – £949 per person

Below is one of Jayne Bond’s stunning dalmatian pelican images captured during the event that we held in January 2016!

Each of the three days will follow a similar format, in the morning we head out on the boat, travel down the lake, pick up fish for feeding, then feed the pelicans on the way back up the lake; the intent here is to draw the birds away from the shoreline, this is for a couple of reasons, firstly, so that the pelicans fly in towards us for some great flight and landing shots, secondly, to ensure that we have nice clean backgrounds.

Following this boat trip, we return to the hotel for lunch in the early afternoon: at about 3pm we head out for the afternoon shooting session, we drive down the edge of the lake to the location where we perform and capture images of a shoreline feed, we shoot literally until the light is gone. When the light is no more, we return to the hotel, clean up & have an evening meal.

The cost is £949 per person for 2017, with no single supplement & everyone having their own room – no need to share!

Although bookings have only just opened, the tour is already half full, so book a place now.

What’s Included in the Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday?

It’s worth noting that we include all accommodation, food, transport, boat trips, fish costs, permits & airport transfer costs in your cost, so all you have to pay for is any drinks & we stay in a lovely hotel about 10 minutes walk from the Lake in the northern area of the lake, no need to have a lengthy drive to the lake each morning!

We do not include the cost of flights in the £899 price, but do suggest which flights would be best to book – however, we do not recommend booking the flights until we have taken bookings for the minimum number of guests that we need to make this trip viable to run. Flights are currently available for around £200 return.

2015 Dalmatian Pelican photography tour report

I had planned to write a blog post about each tour as they came to end but as with all the best-laid plans, things did not quite work out that way! So, now, eight months after our return from Greece, here is a report on the 2015 NaturesLens Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday

Tranquility on the Lake, an image captured on the NaturesLens Dalmatian Pelicans of Lake Kerkini Photography Holiday

In mid-January, NaturesLens took a group of clients to Greece for a 2-day holiday to photograph the Dalmatian Pelicans of Lake Kerkini. Our base was a lovely hotel, 5 minutes walk from the lake itself, with a roaring fire in the bar & lounge area, superb food & each guest had their own room with no single supplement required.

The first morning began with a hearty breakfast after being treated to a special demonstration on how to turn phyllo dough into delicious Bougatsa breakfast pastry. Once we had eaten, we headed out onto the lake in a boat in search of the pelicans.

Dalmatian Pelicans Photography in Greece

We have just posted the event page & details for our Dalmatian Pelicans photography holidayLake Kerkini, situated in northern Greece, not far from the border with Bulgaria, is the setting for our Dalmatian Pelican Photography Holiday – in winter, Lake Kerkini, is the most important place in Europe for the globally threatened Dalmatian Pelican, additionally the lake is a noted haunt of the rare Spotted Eagle.

As of posting this event, only two places remain available, there has already been good interest in this event & places have been reserved.

In January, Lake Kerkini is also home to large numbers of Pygmy Cormorants & thousands of wintering Greater Flamingos.

Our main photographic target is the Dalmatian Pelican, from mid-January until end of March they are at their most attractive with full breeding plumage on show & vocal displays to impress the females. Continue reading
