Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday

The NaturesLens Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday, to be lead in July 2017 by Sean Weekly & Kevin Morgans,  encompasses seas filled with rafts of puffins, razorbills & guillemots coupled with looming offshore rocks contrasting with exposed headlands or sheltered inlets, which are home to the seal population and many other mammals. Our holiday expands on the success of the event of previous years by expanding from two nights on the island, to make that three. As before, we include evening meals, breakfasts, landing fees, plenty of laughter & the opportunity to photograph the island whilst no-one other than our party is on the island, including the amazing golden hour photography. Skomer Island is located approximately 3 miles from Martin’s Haven on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. The island, which is the location for our Puffins Photography holiday is reached by boat, with a journey time of approximately 15 minutes in duration. Skomer Island itself is 750-acres of beautiful habitat for a variety of amazing wildlife experiences. Continue reading

Scottish Grouse Photography Holiday

Calling Black Grouse photographed in the Scottish Highlands during lekking season, photographed during a NaturesLens Scottish Grouse Photography Holiday

There are four grouse species found in the UK, black grousered grouse, ptarmigan & capercaillie: this Grouse Photography Workshop, which spans two days, has the intention of allowing for great portfolio shots to be achieved of three of the grouse species – the Red Grouse on moorland, the Ptarmigan on the heights of a Scottish mountain plus, of course, the Black Grouse; at the black grouse hides you will see the males strut around in a traditional area, known as a lekking site, the males display whilst making a highly distinctive mating call.

Our Grouse Photography Holiday includes transportation, two nights accommodation on a bed & breakfast basis, the services of a professional mountain guide to the ptarmigan, moorland guiding to view & photograph the red grouse & an early morning session at what is probably the best black grouse lekking site in Scotland.

Profile of a Black Grouse photographed in the Scottish Highlands during lekking season during a NaturesLens Scottish Grouse Photography Holiday

Rather than use a black grouse site where we need to sleep in a cold hide prior to the morning spectacle, we make use of a site to which we can travel prior to dawn, we enter the hides in darkness, then await the arrival of the black grouse. When they first arrive, it will still likely be too dark to begin photography, but as the sun rises, the dominant Black Grouse male squares up to his challengers. With the females on the sidelines, watching the lek, the males perform their courtship ritual.

The itinerary varies for this Grouse Photography Holiday, due to the early start one pair of clients will undertake the ptarmigan climb on the first day, whilst the other pair will have a very early start for the black grouse, upon return to the hotel we will all rest for a few hours, we will head to the red grouse moorland site for golden light towards the end of the day. For the second day, the reverse is applicable for each pair of clients.

Please note: in the event of the primary black grouse lek site not producing the results that we hope for or being in some other way not viable, there is a reserve backup site that may be made use of. Should the second site not be viable either, NaturesLens reserve the right to cancel the holiday, we would rather take this action than our clients have an unsatisfactory experience.

Skomer Puffins Photography Holiday

Puffin photographed on Skomer Island during a NaturesLens Puffin Photography Holiday

Following the success of our recent Skomer Residential Workshop that was held at the beginning of June, Drew Buckley & NaturesLens have been planning our followup events for 2015; to that end, NaturesLens are happy to announce an expanded Skomer Puffin Photography Holiday. The event in 2014 was two nights on the island but a number of people’s feedback suggested expanding it to three nights. This is something that we have been able to accommodate & as such, the event is better value than before. The cost for the trip is now £450, but this is for 3 nights on the island. As previously, the event includes accommodation, landing fees, breakfast & evening meals whilst on the island, plus all the photography opportunities that you could hope for, these encompass puffins, manx shearwater, rabbits, owls & much more. There are full details on the event page that we have just released. We are happy to announce that Drew Buckley will again be co-leading the Skomer Puffin Photography Holiday. Drew is local to the area & a font of knowledge on puffins & Skomer in general, plus, he has an easy going teaching style that fits perfectly with NaturesLens.
