Giraffe at Great Rift Valley

Against the layered escarpments and volcanic peaks of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, giraffes browsing the acacia woodland offer a wonderfully graphic subject, their long necks and patterned coats set against the soda lakes and open savannah grassland below. Photographers joining Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness in October should look to use the surrounding scrubby bushveld and distant escarpment lines as natural framing devices, giving images a real sense of place. Wide shots that take in the tectonic trench's dramatic topography can work well alongside tighter portraits, allowing you to tell both the landscape and the animal's story in a single gallery.
