Where is the Iberian Lynx found?

The Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a critically endangered species of wild cat native to the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. This elusive feline is primarily found in the scrublands, grasslands, & open forests of Spain & Portugal, with a small population also existing in southern France. The Iberian Lynx mainly preys on rabbits & is known for its distinctive short tail, tufted ears, & spotted coat. Due to habitat loss, poaching, & a decline in its main prey species, the Iberian Lynx is one of the most threatened wild cat species in the world, with intensive conservation efforts underway to protect & restore its dwindling population.

About Parque Natural De Sierra Morena

Located in the heart of Spain, the Parque Natural de Sierra Morena is home to one of the most elusive & majestic predators-the Iberian Lynx. This beautiful feline species is highly endangered, making sightings extremely rare & special. The park serves as a vital habitat for these solitary creatures, providing them with the necessary resources to thrive. With its dense forests, rolling hills, & diverse wildlife, the Parque Natural de Sierra Morena offers visitors a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of these iconic animals in their natural environment. This experience contributes to the conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Lynx population for future generations to enjoy.

Why We Describe the Iberian Lynx as Elusive

We describe the Iberian Lynx as elusive due to its secretive nature & exceptional ability to avoid human contact. Preferring dense Mediterranean scrubland, it relies on stealth & camouflage to hunt & evade detection. With a critically low population & highly specialized habitat requirements, sightings are rare, further enhancing its mysterious reputation. Its solitary & nocturnal habits, combined with its cautious behavior, make it one of the most difficult wild cats to observe in the wild. Conservation efforts have helped increase its numbers, but the Iberian lynx remains a master of staying hidden, reinforcing its image as a ghost of the Iberian Peninsula.

What to Expect From the Hide Sessions

Photographing the Iberian lynx from a hide requires patience & preparation, as this elusive cat rarely reveals itself easily. Even in specialized photography hides set up in prime habitats, such as those that we use during this trip, sightings are unpredictable, & long hours of waiting in silence are common. The best opportunities typically come at dawn or dusk when the lynx is most active, but there’s no guarantee it will appear within camera range. When it does, the encounter can be brief, demanding quick reflexes & optimal camera settings, or lengthy if the lynx feels comfortable. We have to avoid sudden movements, as the lynx will vanish at the slightest disturbance. For wildlife photographers, the challenge of capturing this rare feline only heightens the reward of a successful shot.

Why Four Intensive Days Delivers A Better Iberian Lynx Photography Experience

For wildlife photographers, capturing the essence of the Iberian lynx requires more than just a lucky encounter – it demands time to craft truly exceptional images. While shorter trips might yield record shots, our four-day expeditions are designed for photographers who want to create portfolio-worthy work.

The extended duration provides crucial advantages:

  • Time to perfect your shots– Multiple encounters allow you to refine composition, experiment with different lenses, & wait for that perfect moment when light & behaviour align
  • Opportunity to tell a visual story– Beyond basic portraits, you’ll capture authentic behaviours, interactions, & environmental context that bring your images to life
  • Flexibility for creative work– Changing weather & light conditions become assets rather than obstacles when you have multiple days to adapt

At NaturesLens, we understand that great wildlife photography isn’t about checking species off a list – it’s about creating art. Our four-day format gives you the time needed to move beyond snapshots & develop a meaningful photographic narrative of Europe’s most elusive cat. With experienced guidance & strategic location planning, we help you return with images that stand out from typical wildlife shots.

For photographers serious about their craft, those extra days make the difference between getting an image & creating something extraordinary.

Great Food

Lunches & dinners on the Iberian Lynx trips are a real part of the experience – proper home-cooked, traditional Spanish food rather than generic hotel fare. Meals are prepared using local ingredients & served simply, with the sort of depth & flavour you’d expect from family cooking in this part of Spain. After time in the field, it’s exactly what you want: good food, generous portions, & a relaxed setting to go over the day’s photography without any fuss.

Location & Species

Why is Sierra de Andújar so good for Iberian lynx photography?

Sierra de Andújar is one of Europe's most reliable locations for Iberian lynx encounters, with specially positioned hides offering close-range photography opportunities. The Mediterranean scrubland habitat provides natural corridors where lynx regularly patrol, creating consistent photographic chances throughout the day.

Wildlife Behaviour

What Iberian lynx behaviours can I expect to photograph?

You can photograph lynx stalking through Mediterranean scrubland, hunting rabbits across open dehesa grassland, & marking territory with characteristic head-up postures. Additional opportunities include lynx grooming or resting in the shade of cork oaks during midday heat, & silhouettes against rocky outcrops at sunset.

Wildlife & Sightings

What wildlife can I expect to photograph?

Species regularly photographed include Iberian lynx as the primary focus. The Mediterranean habitat may also provide opportunities to photograph additional wildlife that shares this ecosystem. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Photography Sessions

How much time do we spend in the photography hides?

This is a dedicated hide-based photography holiday with eight hide sessions across four days, each lasting at least four hours. Sessions are split between morning & afternoon periods, maximising opportunities to photograph lynx behaviour during their most active periods.

Hide Photography

How do the specialist lynx photography hides work?

The photographic hides are strategically positioned at locations where lynx regularly patrol & hunt. Designed specifically for wildlife photography, they allow photographers to work comfortably while remaining concealed, with bathroom facilities inside each hide for extended sessions.

Group Experience

What are the benefits of a 6-photographer group?

The 6-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space in the hides, receives personalised guidance from Pui Hang Miles & enjoys a more relaxed photographic experience. The small group size allows for better hide positioning & quieter observation essential for lynx photography.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

You'll stay at a lodge in Andújar for 6 nights on a full-board basis with single occupancy accommodation included as standard. All meals are traditional Spanish home-cooked dishes, & the lodge provides excellent facilities within easy reach of the photography hide locations.

Booking & Changes

How do I book & what flexibility do I have for changes?

Secure your place with a booking deposit, with early booking recommended. Any changes or cancellations are subject to our booking terms & conditions, so contact us as early as possible to discuss the options available.

Photography Skills

Do I need advanced photography skills?

No advanced skills are required. Pui Hang Miles & the local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during the hide sessions. This experience is designed for photographers of all skill levels & expertise.

Equipment

What photography equipment should I bring?

Bring a camera with telephoto lens capability suitable for wildlife photography, spare batteries & memory cards. The hides allow for comfortable shooting with longer lenses, & detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

Summer Conditions

Why is summer a good time for Iberian lynx photography?

Summer provides warm Mediterranean light ideal for capturing lynx in their natural habitat, with longer daylight hours extending photography opportunities. The warm climate creates comfortable conditions for extended hide sessions, & lynx remain active throughout the day seeking shade during midday heat.

Accessibility

Are the photography hides accessible for photographers with reduced mobility?

Yes, the photographic hides are easily accessible, even for individuals with reduced mobility. Each hide includes bathroom facilities inside & comfortable seating arrangements designed for extended photography sessions.

Best Time to Visit

When is the best time to photograph Iberian lynx: winter or summer?

Both work, for different reasons. In winter (our December departures) the lynx are entering their mating season, so they tend to be more active & vocal, cooler days allow longer hide sessions & low sun gives soft, warm light. In summer (our July departures) the heat concentrates activity towards evening, so we photograph from hides at dusk, & the year’s kittens, born in spring, may be seen with their mothers. If active adults in crisp winter light appeal most, choose winter; if the chance of young lynx appeals, choose summer.
