Cantalejo Wildlife Photography

Cantalejo lies in the province of Segovia, within the autonomous community of Castilla y León in north-central Spain. The area sits on the northern edge of the Iberian plateau, where rolling farmland gives way to limestone outcrops, wooded hillsides & river gorges that cut through the surrounding countryside. This mosaic of open steppe, pine & holm oak woodland, & dramatic cliff faces creates ideal conditions for raptors, which rely on the thermals rising from the exposed rock & sparsely vegetated ground to hunt & soar with minimal effort. The gorges in particular provide nesting ledges safe from ground predators, while the farmland below offers rich hunting grounds.

The skies above Cantalejo are dominated by an impressive assemblage of birds of prey, from the majestic Golden Eagle & powerful Bonelli's Eagle to the more numerous Griffon Vulture, often seen circling in large soaring groups above the cliffs. Egyptian Vulture & Red Kite add further variety among the scavenging species, while Black Kite & the diminutive Lesser Kestrel represent the more agile hunters of the open country. Beyond the raptors, the region's warmer, insect-rich habitats support colourful summer visitors such as the European Bee-eater, whose electric plumage & aerial feeding displays are a highlight, alongside the distinctive, crested Eurasian Hoopoe, frequently encountered probing the ground for grubs in cultivated fields & open scrub.
