Scarlet Ibis at Caroni Swamp

Caroni Swamp, a mangrove wetland of tidal channels and lagoons on Trinidad's west coast near Port of Spain, is protected as a wildlife sanctuary and offers one of the Caribbean's great birding spectacles. As dusk settles, Scarlet Ibis — Trinidad's national bird — arrive in their thousands to roost among the mangroves, joined by herons and egrets in a chorus of colour and movement. April is the typical month to witness this, and travellers on the Tropical Birds Of Trinidad holiday can look forward to positioning themselves along the waterways to capture these vivid birds against the darkening green canopy.
