Northern Peru offers one of the most concentrated & rewarding hummingbird photography experiences anywhere in the world. Set across the eastern slopes of the Andes, this itinerary moves through cloud forest & Amazonian habitats where species diversity is exceptionally high, with the potential to photograph dozens of hummingbird species across a single trip.

The structure of the trip is built around access to proven locations – lodges, reserves & specialist gardens – where feeders & natural flowers provide consistent, high-quality photographic opportunities. This allows us to work subjects repeatedly, refining technique & building a strong, varied portfolio rather than relying on chance encounters.

Highlights include time in Abra Patricia & Huembo, where we focus on some of the most sought-after species in South America, including the remarkable Marvelous Spatuletail, alongside sword-billed hummingbirds, sunangels & coquettes. The itinerary also incorporates opportunities to photograph endemic antpittas & a selection of unique cloud forest species.

The trip concludes on the Pacific coast, adding a final layer of variety with seabird photography from a boat-based session. This combination of controlled hummingbird photography, endemic species & broader bird diversity results in a highly productive & well-rounded photographic experience.

Why Peru for Hummingbird Photography

Why is Northern Peru considered exceptional for hummingbird photography?

Northern Peru offers one of the most concentrated & rewarding hummingbird photography experiences anywhere in the world, with potential to photograph dozens of species across a single trip. The eastern slopes of the Andes provide cloud forest & Amazonian habitats where species diversity is exceptionally high, combined with proven locations offering consistent, high-quality photographic opportunities through feeders & natural flowers.

Marvelous Spatuletail Photography

What makes the Marvelous Spatuletail photography sessions at Huembo so special?

The Marvelous Spatuletail is one of South America's most sought-after species, displaying extraordinary racket-tipped outer tail feathers that create unique photographic opportunities. Huembo Reserve provides dedicated access over 2 full days, allowing multiple sessions to capture their remarkable displaying behaviour & ornate tail plumes in controlled conditions.

Hummingbird Species

What hummingbird species can I expect to photograph?

Species regularly photographed include Marvelous Spatuletail, Long-tailed Sylph, Royal Sunangel, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Collared Inca & wire-crested thorntails, alongside sword-billed hummingbirds, sunangels & coquettes. The trip structure allows potential to photograph up to 50 hummingbird species across multiple cloud forest & rainforest locations. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Photography Time Allocation

How much time is dedicated to hummingbird photography sessions?

This is a dedicated hummingbird photography holiday with 10 days spent at specialist locations designed for controlled shooting. Multiple sessions are scheduled at Waqanki Lodge gardens, Abra Patricia cloud forest feeders, & Huembo Reserve, allowing high repetition opportunities to refine technique & build a varied portfolio rather than relying on chance encounters.

Feeder Setup Photography

How do the specialist hummingbird gardens & feeder setups work?

The gardens & reserves use strategically positioned feeders & natural flowers to attract hummingbirds for consistent photography opportunities. These proven locations allow photographers to work subjects repeatedly in controlled conditions, with feeders designed specifically for photography to enable comfortable positioning while capturing feeding behaviour, hovering & displaying.

Small Group Benefits

What are the benefits of a 5-photographer group for hummingbird photography?

The 5-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space around the feeder stations & gardens, receives personalised guidance from David Miles & the local guides, & enjoys flexible positioning for optimal shooting angles. Smaller groups also allow more time at productive locations when hummingbird activity is high.

Cloud Forest Locations

What makes Abra Patricia & the cloud forest locations special for photography?

Abra Patricia provides access to high-altitude species like Royal Sunangels & sword-billed hummingbirds in their natural cloud forest habitat. The location combines specialist feeders with natural flowers like angel's trumpets, creating opportunities to photograph species with their preferred food sources while capturing the mossy, atmospheric cloud forest environment.

Additional Wildlife

What other wildlife can I photograph beyond hummingbirds?

The itinerary includes opportunities to photograph Andean Cock-of-the-Rock at dawn leks, endemic antpittas at dedicated feeding stations, & cloud forest species like Crested Quetzal. The trip concludes with coastal seabird photography from a boat session at Pucusana, adding marine wildlife & seabirds to complete a diverse portfolio.

Accommodation & Locations

What is the accommodation like & how does it support the photography?

You'll stay at specialist wildlife lodges including Waqanki Lodge, Owlet Lodge & Huembo Lodge, chosen for their proximity to proven hummingbird locations & feeder setups. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard. Each location provides direct access to gardens & feeding areas, minimising travel time & maximising photography opportunities.

Photography Equipment

What camera equipment should I bring for hummingbird photography?

Bring a camera capable of fast autofocus for capturing hovering hummingbirds, telephoto lenses suitable for small, fast-moving subjects, spare batteries & memory cards. A second camera body with a wider lens can be useful for environmental shots in the cloud forest settings. Detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

Skill Level Requirements

Do I need advanced photography skills for this hummingbird trip?

No advanced skills are required. David Miles & the local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during the feeder sessions & garden photography. The controlled nature of the setups allows time to learn & improve technique while working with these challenging but rewarding subjects.

Why Multiple Locations

Why does the itinerary visit multiple hummingbird locations rather than staying at one?

Different locations across Northern Peru's elevational gradient host different hummingbird species - from Amazonian species at lower elevations to high-altitude cloud forest specialists. Moving through Waqanki Lodge, Abra Patricia & Huembo Reserve maximises species diversity, with each location offering unique species combinations & specialized feeder setups.
