Marvelous Spatuletail, one of the most extraordinary hummingbirds in the world, headlines the trip, alongside Sword-billed Hummingbird, Rufous-crested Coquette, Royal Sunangel, & Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. Marvelous Spatuletail
Local legend holds the species in genuine reverence, & the feeder site used on this trip has been protected for years specifically because of the income & pride it brings the surrounding community.
Few hummingbirds anywhere match the Marvelous Spatuletail for sheer visual extravagance — the male’s tail carries just four feathers, two of them elongated wires ending in iridescent blue-violet discs, used in a genuinely bizarre display. Sword-billed Hummingbird, Coquette & Sunangel
Watching a Sword-billed Hummingbird feed, tilting its whole body backward to manage the sheer length of its bill, is a genuinely odd & memorable sight even for photographers who have seen the species in photographs many times before.
Sword-billed Hummingbird carries a bill longer than its own body, an adaptation for feeding from equally elongated flowers, & is one of the most immediately recognisable hummingbirds anywhere in the world. Rufous-crested Coquette adds a burst of colour with its spiked crest & speckled cheek plumes, while Royal Sunangel, a genuinely range-restricted species, rewards the trip’s more remote valley visits.
Each of these species demands a slightly different feeder setup or habitat, which is part of why the itinerary moves between several distinct valleys rather than basing the whole trip at one lodge.
Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
Reaching the lek site well before dawn & settling in quietly is essential, since the display begins with first light & any disturbance can send the males back into cover before the group has a chance to photograph the performance properly.
Peru’s national bird performs an elaborate lek display at dawn, with multiple males competing for female attention through a mix of calls & postures — a genuinely dramatic spectacle & one of the trip’s most memorable mornings. The vivid orange plumage against the dim cloud forest light makes for a genuinely challenging but rewarding exposure.

Steve lives & works in Peru year-round & maintains relationships with the local landowners & feeder operators central to several of this trip’s target species.
That local presence means David & Steve together can adapt the itinerary in real time if a particular species has become harder to find at one site, redirecting the group to a more productive alternative without losing time.
Why Ten Nights Across Several Distinct Valleys
Every extra valley added to the route brings its own travel time, but also its own unique target species worth that time.
Peru’s rarest hummingbirds don’t share the same range, & moving between several distinct valleys is the only realistic way to see more than one or two of the trip’s headline species. A shorter, single-location trip would inevitably mean sacrificing several of the target birds entirely.
That valley-hopping structure also gives a genuine sense of how quickly habitat & species composition changes across relatively short distances in the Andes, adding real variety to the trip beyond the hummingbirds themselves.
When to Visit Peru
Our current departure runs in January, during a relatively settled period in Peru’s cloud forest regions when trails remain accessible & feeder activity across the various valleys stays consistent.
Planning Your Trip to Peru
A telephoto lens in the 300mm to 500mm range with good close-focus capability suits most of the feeder-based photography, while a flash setup considerably improves results given how fast hummingbirds move. A longer lens is worth carrying for the Cock-of-the-Rock lek, given the greater working distance typical there.
Cloud forest weather brings frequent light rain & high humidity, so a rain cover for camera kit & quick-drying clothing are worth packing. Elevation changes across the valleys visited mean warmer & cooler layers both have their place across the trip.
Lima is the usual arrival point, with an internal flight & road transfers connecting the valleys visited across the itinerary.
