Atlas Mountains Wildlife Photography

The Atlas Mountains form a rugged spine across Morocco, stretching from the Atlantic coast in the west toward the Algerian border in the east, & separating the temperate, Mediterranean-influenced regions to the north from the pre-Saharan & desert landscapes that unfold to the south. This transitional zone encompasses high rocky ridges, arid plateaux, & stony hamada desert fringes, creating a mosaic of habitats where mountain terrain gives way to semi-desert & true desert conditions. It is this interface between highland & desert that makes the region so ecologically distinctive, supporting species adapted to harsh, open environments alongside those more typical of arid steppe.

Wildlife here reflects the demanding desert-edge conditions, with a strong showing of larks & desert specialists well adapted to sparse vegetation & rocky or sandy substrates. Bar-tailed Lark, Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark, & Thick-billed Lark forage across open ground, while Desert Warbler favours scrubbier cover. Cream-coloured Courser & the elusive African Houbara Bustard represent the region's more elusive ground-dwelling birds, both relying on cryptic plumage to avoid detection. Nocturnal specialists include the Egyptian Nightjar, active at dusk, & the enigmatic Fennec Fox, whose oversized ears aid heat dissipation in this challenging climate. Reptile interest comes from the Desert Monitor, an impressive predator of the arid zones, & the venomous Horned Viper, instantly recognisable by the small horn-like scales above its eyes.
