Species profile

About this species

The Desert Monitor is a large lizard found across arid regions from North Africa through the Middle East to Central Asia. It is one of the most widespread monitor species, capable of reaching lengths of up to 1.5 metres, with a robust build & a long, forked tongue used for sensing its environment. It is a highly adaptable predator, feeding on small mammals, birds, eggs, & invertebrates across sandy & rocky desert landscapes.

Habitat

Arid & semi-arid desert environments including sandy plains, rocky outcrops, scrubland, & dry river beds across North Africa, the Middle East, & Central Asia

Best time

Early morning during spring & autumn when temperatures are moderate & the monitor is actively basking to warm up after cool nights

Approach

Approach slowly & low to the ground in the early morning when the lizard is basking & less likely to flee, as sudden movements will cause it to retreat quickly. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a respectful distance while still capturing detailed close-up shots of the scales & facial features. Shoot with the sun at your back & aim for a low angle to capture the animal at eye level, which produces a more compelling & natural-looking composition.

Trips featuring Desert Monitor

The holidays below are pulled from the same species relationship, so the guide stays tied to live departures rather than becoming a static article.

The photography holidays listed below operate in regions & habitats where the Desert Monitor is regularly encountered. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed, but our itineraries are designed around seasonal behaviour, suitable habitat, & photographic opportunity, giving you the best possible chance of meaningful encounters in the field. Our small-group approach allows time in the field to adapt to conditions, behaviour, & photographic opportunities as they unfold. You can photograph the Desert Monitor in Morocco. During our photography holidays, the Desert Monitor is often photographed alongside African Houbara Bustard, Bar-tailed Lark, Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark, Cream-coloured Courser, Desert Warbler, & Egyptian Nightjar. Seasonal presence & photographic opportunity vary by location & time of year.
