About this species
The Bar-tailed Lark is a small, ground-dwelling bird found across arid & semi-arid regions of North Africa & the Middle East. It is characterised by its pale sandy-brown plumage, which provides excellent camouflage against rocky & sandy desert terrain. The species is named for the distinctive dark & white barring visible on its tail feathers during flight.

Early morning during spring & autumn when birds are most active & the light is favourable for capturing plumage detail in arid landscapes.
Approach slowly & low to the ground as this species is easily disturbed, using natural cover where possible to get close without flushing the bird. Shoot in the early morning when the light is warm & low, which enhances the subtle tones of the sandy plumage against the desert substrate. A longer focal length lens of 400mm or more is recommended to maintain distance while still achieving frame-filling shots.
