Species profile

About this species

The horned viper is a venomous snake native to the deserts of North Africa & the Middle East, recognised by the distinctive horn-like scales above each eye. It is a relatively small species, typically reaching 50-60 cm in length, with a stout body & a cryptic sandy or pale brown colouration that provides excellent camouflage against desert terrain. It is primarily nocturnal & uses a sidewinding locomotion to move efficiently across loose sand.

Habitat

Arid desert & semi-desert environments, particularly areas with loose sandy soil, rocky outcrops & sparse scrubland across North Africa & the Middle East

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Late spring to early autumn for activity; dawn & dusk are ideal times of day as the species is crepuscular & nocturnal, often found at the surface during cooler hours

Approach

Photograph from a safe distance using a telephoto or macro lens to avoid disturbing the snake & risking a dangerous encounter. Focus on capturing the textural detail of the scales & the striking horns against the sandy substrate, using a low angle to create a compelling perspective. Early morning light provides warm tones & soft shadows that complement the snake's natural colouration whilst the animal may still be active near the surface.
