Southern Morocco is open & exposed. South of the Atlas Mountains, the land breaks into wide gravel plains, dry riverbeds & dune systems where visibility stretches for kilometres. Mornings are cool & still, with colour building quickly as the sun rises, while evenings bring fast-falling temperatures as heat leaves the ground. Light changes rapidly, rewarding early starts & careful positioning.

Wildlife activity follows clear patterns tied to temperature & time of day. Birds move early, often flying low across open ground before heat builds. Mammals appear briefly at dusk, keeping to the edges of dunes & plains rather than crossing open terrain. Reptiles surface only in narrow temperature windows, when conditions allow movement without prolonged exposure. Photography here depends on timing rather than volume.

This trip is structured to work with those rhythms. Days are planned around light & temperature rather than fixed timetables, allowing sessions to extend or pause as conditions dictate. Travel is by private 4×4, with time spent on foot where needed to work angles & backgrounds. Group sizes are kept small, with experienced guidance focused on reading behaviour, anticipating movement & refining composition in open environments.

Our guests will leave Morocco with images shaped by restraint rather than spectacle. The emphasis is on clean backgrounds, controlled light & behaviour-led encounters, alongside a stronger understanding of how to work in arid conditions. This is a trip that sharpens fieldcraft as much as portfolios, rewarding patience, observation & precision.

Moroccan Wildlife Photography Holiday Itinerary

The following is the proposed itinerary for this photography holiday, it should be considered provisional & subject to change.

  • Day 1 - Assemble Marrakech Airport - transfer to Local Hotel - overnight Marrakech
  • Day 2 - Atlas crossing, Valley of Birds photography - transfer to Boumalne Dades - overnight Boumalne Dades
  • Day 3 - Sunrise bird photography, desert wildlife, night session - overnight Boumalne Dades
  • Day 4 - Travel to Sahara, wildlife en route, sunset dune photography - transfer to Merzouga - overnight Merzouga
  • Day 5 - Desert birding, remote plains, first Fennec Fox session - overnight Merzouga
  • Day 6 - Reptile photography, dunes, second Fennec Fox session - overnight Merzouga
  • Day 7 - Pre-sunrise ATV session, rest, evening Fennec Fox photography - overnight Merzouga
  • Day 8 - Final sunrise photography - transfer to Errachdia

Intended photography subjects include African Houbara Bustard, Bar-tailed Lark, Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark, Cream-coloured Courser, Desert Monitor, Desert Warbler, Egyptian Nightjar, Fennec Fox, Horned Viper & Thick-billed Lark. As with all ethical wildlife photography, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Not all mentioned wildlife can be observed & photographed at all times of the year, thus some activities may be considered seasonal & not available.

Please note the cuisine on many of the NaturesLens photography holidays is authentic & typical of the region in which you are travelling. International or western cuisine is often NOT available. All personal luggage are the responsibility of the owner & we request that photography holiday participants limit their luggage to the equivalent of one suitcase, one flight bag, one camera bag & tripod.
