Madagascar is unlike anywhere else. Isolated for millions of years, it has evolved a wildlife community found nowhere else on Earth – lemurs, chameleons, vangas & a host of extraordinary reptiles & amphibians. This itinerary has been designed to move through the island’s key habitats, from the dry forests of the west to the dense rainforests of the east, giving you access to a remarkable range of species & photographic opportunities.

We begin in Kirindy, one of the best locations to photograph Madagascar’s top predator – the fossa – alongside sifakas, mouse lemurs & a variety of nocturnal species. From here, the journey transitions east into Andasibe & Maromizaha, where rainforest specialists take over: indri calling through the canopy, diademed sifaka moving through filtered light, & a rich supporting cast of birds, reptiles & amphibians.

The second half of the trip pushes further into remote Madagascar, flying north to Maroantsetra & continuing by boat into Nosy Mangabe & Masoala National Park. These are among the most biodiverse regions in the country, where red ruffed lemurs, aye-aye & a wide range of chameleons & leaf-tailed geckos can be photographed. Time here is deliberately unhurried, allowing for repeated sessions & a focus on behaviour as much as portraiture.

Throughout, the itinerary balances structured guiding with flexibility. Daytime hikes are complemented by regular night walks, giving access to Madagascar’s exceptional nocturnal wildlife. The result is a trip that isn’t just about seeing species – it’s about returning with a genuinely varied & high-quality body of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve compiled answers to the questions we are most commonly asked about this photography tour, covering everything from accommodation, transport & group size through to photography opportunities, fitness requirements & what to expect in the field. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to contact us – we’re always happy to discuss any aspect of the trip before you book.

Wildlife Photography

What wildlife can I expect to photograph in Madagascar?

Species regularly photographed include indri, diademed sifaka, fossa, aye-aye, red ruffed lemurs, black & white ruffed lemurs, panther chameleons, satanic leaf-tailed geckos, tomato frogs & helmet vangas. Additional reptiles, amphibians & bird species may also be encountered across the diverse habitats. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Itinerary & Activities

How much time do we spend in each habitat type?

The 15-night itinerary moves through three distinct habitats: dry forest at Kirindy (3 nights), eastern rainforest at Andasibe & Maromizaha (3 nights), & remote coastal rainforest at Nosy Mangabe & Masoala (6 nights). Time is deliberately unhurried at each location, allowing for repeated photography sessions & focus on behaviour as much as portraiture.

Nocturnal Photography

What nocturnal species can I photograph?

Night walks are scheduled regularly throughout the itinerary to photograph Madagascar's exceptional nocturnal wildlife. Species include aye-aye, mouse lemurs, various chameleons, satanic leaf-tailed geckos & nocturnal mammals in Kirindy. Each location offers different nocturnal species, with dedicated spotlight walks providing multiple opportunities.

Unique Access

How do we access the remote Masoala National Park?

Access to Masoala involves flying to Maroantsetra then continuing by boat to reach this biodiverse region. This remote location provides access to red ruffed lemurs, aye-aye & a wide range of chameleons & leaf-tailed geckos unavailable elsewhere. The boat journey itself may offer additional photographic opportunities.

Fossa Photography

Why is Kirindy Forest particularly good for fossa photography?

Kirindy is one of the best locations to photograph Madagascar's top predator, the fossa, alongside sifakas & mouse lemurs. The dry deciduous forest habitat & established wildlife corridors provide regular fossa encounters. Dedicated forest walks & night sessions maximise opportunities to photograph this elusive carnivore.

Group Size

What are the benefits of a 6-photographer group?

The 6-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space during forest walks & night photography sessions, receives personalised guidance from David Miles & the local guides, & enjoys a more relaxed photographic experience. Smaller groups move more quietly through the forest, improving wildlife encounter opportunities.

Seasonal Conditions

What are the photographic advantages of Madagascar's summer season?

Madagascar's summer provides warm conditions ideal for active wildlife behaviour & extended photography sessions. Reptiles & amphibians are particularly active, chameleons display vivid colours, & the breeding season brings increased animal activity. Regular rainfall keeps the rainforest lush while not significantly disrupting photography schedules.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

You'll stay 15 nights across specialist ecolodges including Kirindy Ecolodge, Feon'ny Ala, Au Mirandava, Manga Beach, Camp Nosy Mangabe & Dounia Forest Lodge. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard. Each location provides comfortable access to the surrounding habitats for early morning & evening photography sessions.

Photography Skills

Do I need advanced photography skills?

No advanced skills are required. David Miles & the local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during forest walks & night photography sessions. The varied pace allows time to work with subjects properly, focusing on composition & behaviour rather than rushing between locations.

Equipment

What equipment should I bring?

Bring a camera capable of high-ISO performance for nocturnal photography, telephoto lenses suitable for wildlife, macro capability for amphibians & reptiles, spare batteries & memory cards. A headlorch with red filter is essential for night walks. Detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

Reptile & Amphibian Photography

What makes Madagascar special for reptile & amphibian photography?

Madagascar's isolation has created unique species found nowhere else, including panther chameleons with vivid turquoise & orange colouration, satanic leaf-tailed geckos with perfect camouflage, & brilliant red-orange tomato frogs. The variety of habitats from dry forest to rainforest provides access to different species throughout the itinerary.

Inclusions

What's included in the trip cost?

Trip cost includes 15 nights accommodation with single occupancy as standard, all meals on a full board basis, guiding by David Miles, local guides, internal flights, boat transfers, park fees & permits. Airport transfers & international flights are not included.
