Madagascar is unlike anywhere else. Isolated for millions of years, it has evolved a wildlife community found nowhere else on Earth – lemurs, chameleons, vangas & a host of extraordinary reptiles & amphibians. This itinerary has been designed to move through the island’s key habitats, from the dry forests of the west to the dense rainforests of the east, giving you access to a remarkable range of species & photographic opportunities.

We begin in Kirindy, one of the best locations to photograph Madagascar’s top predator – the fossa – alongside sifakas, mouse lemurs & a variety of nocturnal species. From here, the journey transitions east into Andasibe & Maromizaha, where rainforest specialists take over: indri calling through the canopy, diademed sifaka moving through filtered light, & a rich supporting cast of birds, reptiles & amphibians.

The second half of the trip pushes further into remote Madagascar, flying north to Maroantsetra & continuing by boat into Nosy Mangabe & Masoala National Park. These are among the most biodiverse regions in the country, where red ruffed lemurs, aye-aye & a wide range of chameleons & leaf-tailed geckos can be photographed. Time here is deliberately unhurried, allowing for repeated sessions & a focus on behaviour as much as portraiture.

Throughout, the itinerary balances structured guiding with flexibility. Daytime hikes are complemented by regular night walks, giving access to Madagascar’s exceptional nocturnal wildlife. The result is a trip that isn’t just about seeing species – it’s about returning with a genuinely varied & high-quality body of work.

  • Day 1 - Fly to Morondava, drive to Kirindy, evening forest walk - transfer to Kirindy - overnight Kirindy Ecolodge
  • Day 2 - Morning & afternoon forest walks, night walk - overnight Kirindy Ecolodge
  • Day 3 - Morning Kirindy visit, Akiba Reserve, Baobabs at sunset - transfer to Morondava - overnight Select Hotel
  • Day 4 - Sunrise Baobabs, fly to Antananarivo, drive to Andasibe - transfer to Andasibe - overnight Feon'ny Ala
  • Day 5 - Full-day Analamazaotra hike, night walk Mitsinjo - overnight Feon'ny Ala
  • Day 6 - Maromizaha Reserve hike, return to Antananarivo - transfer to Antananarivo - overnight Au Mirandava
