Red ruffed lemur Photography Holidays

Varecia rubra

Explore our Red ruffed lemur photography holidays in Madagascar, planned to give photographers proper time with this species during the dry season between May and October. Our small-group photography holidays prioritise time in the field, light, behaviour, positioning & repeatable photographic opportunities rather than rushed wildlife viewing.

Species profile

About this species

The red ruffed lemur is a large, striking primate endemic to the Masoala Peninsula in north-eastern Madagascar. It is characterised by its rich reddish-brown fur, black face, hands, feet & tail, and a distinctive white patch on the back of the neck. It is one of the largest living lemurs and is critically endangered due to habitat loss & illegal hunting.

Habitat

Tropical rainforest canopy, primarily in the Masoala Peninsula of north-eastern Madagascar, where they favour tall primary forest with abundant fruit-bearing trees

Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn, particularly during the dry season between May & October when forest visibility is better & the lemurs are most active

Approach

Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to capture close-up shots without disturbing the animal in its canopy habitat. Photograph during active feeding periods in the early morning when light filters through the forest and the lemurs are most mobile. Shoot in burst mode to capture sharp images of their dynamic leaping & climbing behaviour between trees.
