Set within the dramatic landscapes of ‘s Great Rift Valley, Shompole Wilderness Camp offers exceptional access to the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness. This remote, unfenced environment forms the heart of our Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness photography holiday, placing photographers in a setting where animals move freely through the landscape and photographic opportunities evolve naturally.

The wildlife of Shompole Wilderness is drawn to permanent water sources, open plains & seasonal grazing areas, creating regular encounters throughout the day. Elephants, giraffes, antelope & plains game are frequent visitors, while predators such as lions & leopards add anticipation and unpredictability to every session.

With NaturesLens working closely alongside experienced local guides, the Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness photography holiday is designed to balance unhurried observation with purposeful time in the field. This approach suits both developing photographers & those with extensive wildlife photography experience, allowing everyone to work at a comfortable, considered pace.

Between wildlife sessions, Shompole Wilderness Camp provides comfortable accommodation that blends seamlessly into its surroundings. Photography takes place either on guided game drives or from purpose-built hides, offering multiple perspectives on the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness as light, behaviour & movement change throughout the day.

Rather than constant travel, the Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness photography holiday focuses on time, patience & positioning. By remaining within a compact area of the Great Rift Valley, photographers are able to observe natural behaviour unfold and create more deliberate, story-driven images.

Join David on the Wildlife of Shompole Wilderness photography holiday & experience the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness in a way that rewards anticipation, understanding of behaviour & a deep appreciation of light and landscape.

What is the photography hide experience in Shompole Wilderness like?

Shompole Wilderness Camp features two dedicated photography hides, each overlooking a different waterhole within the wider Shompole Wilderness area. While some guests may spend time in both hides during their stay, each attracts a distinct mix of species depending on season, conditions & time of day.

Both hides are carefully positioned to take advantage of natural lighting, with changing angles & reflections shaping the character of each photographic session. The hides allow photographers to remain concealed, enabling close observation of the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness as animals come in to drink without disturbance.

Experienced guides are present throughout to provide insight into animal behaviour, movement patterns & emerging photographic opportunities. Their experienced guidance helps photographers anticipate moments, refine camera settings & make the most of the available light rather than reacting after the event.

From the hides, photographers may encounter elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelope, lions & a diverse range of bird species. Each waterhole has its own rhythm & atmosphere, with wide, open views across the surrounding landscape adding scale & context to wildlife images.
