What drew you to wildlife photography in the first place?

I started photographing birds in my garden during lockdown and quickly became obsessed with capturing their behaviour rather than just their appearance. The pelicans of Lake Kerkini were the first real wildlife I ever photographed abroad, and watching a Dalmatian pelican land on water at dawn, wings backlit by golden light, completely changed what I wanted from photography. I have never looked back.

What is the one thing you always tell photographers before a trip?

Slow down. People arrive at a location and immediately start firing off frames, but the best images come when you watch first. With pelicans especially, if you study how they move for ten minutes before picking up the camera, you will anticipate the wing stretch, the fish toss, the head shake, and your timing will be so much better for it.

What is your favourite moment from a NaturesLens trip?

A morning on Lake Kerkini when the mist was so thick we could barely see the water. Then a group of pelicans appeared through the haze, completely silent, gliding in formation just above the surface. Every photographer on the boat stopped shooting and just watched. That is what these trips are really about — being in the right place at the right time with people who understand why it matters.
