This 7-night, 6-day bird photography holiday in Extremadura is based on a private estate in the dehesa country of western Spain. The trip is built around hide sessions targeting Golden Eagles, Booted Eagles, vultures, & other Iberian species, with the estate giving us access to locations & feeding stations that are not open to the public.
Why Extremadura is a Top Destination for Bird Photography
Extremadura’s combination of open dehesa, river valleys, & rocky sierras supports one of the highest densities of raptors in Western Europe. What matters for photographers is that many of these species are approachable from well-positioned hides:
- Golden Eagles – Photographed from hides at close range, in flight & perched, often against clean sky or dehesa backgrounds.
- Booted Eagles – Fast & agile, good subjects for practising flight photography with a long lens.
- Griffon & Black Vultures – Regularly seen in groups of fifty or more, giving you repeated opportunities for flight & feeding shots.
- Azure-winged Magpies – An Iberian speciality found in the cork oak groves around the estate.
- Floating Hide Sessions – Water-level behavioural portraits from the hydrohide.
Bird Photography Opportunities in Extremadura
The itinerary is structured around raptor photography but includes a good variety of other species:
- Dedicated eagle hides – Set at distances that fill the frame with a 500mm or 600mm lens.
- Morning flight sessions – Golden Eagles working the thermals in the first hours of light.
- Raptor interactions – Eagles, vultures, & kites competing at feeding stations create dynamic sequences.
- Hydrohide access – Eye-level work with Kingfishers & waterbirds from a concealed water-level position.
