Our Bulgarian Reptiles & Amphibians photography tour represent one of Europe’s richest & most rewarding nature holiday specialisms, with an extraordinary diversity concentrated into a compact, accessible region. This tour is purpose-built around European herpetology, focusing on reliable, repeatable encounters rather than chance sightings. Thanks to well-preserved habitats & Bulgaria’s unique bio-geographical position, many species found here are either rare elsewhere in Europe or absent entirely.

Scheduled to coincide with the early breeding season, this holiday is timed to maximise visibility & activity across frogs, toads, snakes, lizards, & tortoises. We expect to encounter over 35 species during the trip, including several with restricted distributions. Amphibian calling activity, basking reptiles, & heightened surface movement all contribute to consistently productive field sessions. As some key species are nocturnal, evening observations form an important part of the experience.

The itinerary covers three of the most important regions for reptiles & amphibians in Bulgaria, providing multiple opportunities to observe priority species across different habitats. From wetlands & abandoned military sites to river corridors, sand dunes, forested foothills, & coastal reserves, each location has been selected for species density & ecological importance. Daily travel distances are kept deliberately short, ensuring maximum time in the field & reduced fatigue during long observation days.

This is a small-group, leader-led nature holiday designed for depth rather than pace, with guidance from Pui Hang. Field plans remain flexible, responding to weather conditions, activity levels, & recent sightings to optimise results. Whether searching sun-exposed slopes, listening for amphibian calls after dusk, or revisiting productive areas for missed species, the tour is structured to deliver a comprehensive & authentic introduction to Reptiles & Amphibians in Bulgaria.

Photography themes commonly associated with this trip include amphibian macro photography, frog photography, macro photography of flowers, insects & other miniature flora & fauna, macro photography subjects, reptile & amphibian macro photography, or snake.
