Species profile

About this species

The Booted Eagle is a small yet powerful raptor found across Europe, Asia & Africa, named for the distinctive feathering that extends down its legs to the base of its toes. It occurs in two colour morphs - a pale form with whitish underparts & a darker brown form - making it one of the more variable eagles in its range. Despite its modest size, it is an agile & capable hunter, preying on small birds, mammals & lizards.

Habitat

The Booted Eagle favours open woodland, forest edges, Mediterranean scrub & mountain slopes with a mix of trees & open ground for hunting. It breeds across southern Europe, central Asia & parts of North Africa, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa & the Indian subcontinent.

Best time

Spring & early summer during the breeding season offer the best opportunities, as adults are active around nest sites & perform display flights. Early morning & late afternoon light provides the warmest tones & the most flattering angle for photographing birds in flight.

Approach

Position yourself near woodland edges or open hillsides where the eagle hunts, as it frequently patrols these transitional zones & offers clearer flight shots against an open sky. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000s to freeze the wing beats during active flight, & consider a telephoto lens of 500mm or longer to fill the frame without disturbing the bird. Learning to identify the two colour morphs beforehand will help you anticipate the bird & adjust your exposure settings quickly when it appears.
