About this species
The Torrent Duck is a striking South American duck found exclusively along fast-flowing Andean rivers & streams. Males display bold black & white patterning with a red bill, while females sport a rufous-orange underside & grey upperparts. This species is highly adapted to turbulent whitewater environments, using its stiff tail & streamlined body to navigate powerful currents with remarkable agility.
Fast-flowing, rocky Andean rivers & streams at elevations between 1,500 and 4,500 metres, typically with cold, highly oxygenated whitewater conditions throughout the Andes mountain range of South America.

Photography notes
Early morning light provides the most flattering illumination along steep Andean river valleys, where direct sunlight can be limited. The dry season between May & October generally offers clearer water & more predictable bird behaviour, making sightings more reliable.
Position yourself low on the riverbank to achieve eye-level shots that emphasise the dramatic whitewater habitat surrounding the bird. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze both the duck & the turbulent water simultaneously, capturing sharp detail against the dynamic background. Scout locations where the river narrows or flows over rocks, as torrent ducks frequently perch on boulders mid-stream, offering clear & unobstructed compositions.
