Wildlife Photography

What wildlife can I expect to photograph in the Maasai Mara?

Species regularly photographed include African Lion, African Leopard, Cheetah, African Elephant, African Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Blue Wildebeest, Hippopotamus, Lilac-breasted Roller & more. Additional species may also visit the reserve during your stay. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed.

Big Cat Photography

Why is the Maasai Mara particularly good for big cat photography?

The Maasai Mara provides open savannah conditions ideal for photographing African lions, leopards & cheetahs. The reserve's terrain allows excellent visibility & positioning opportunities, while our camp's location 5 minutes from the reserve border maximises photography time during optimal light conditions.

Photography Experience

How much time do we spend on wildlife photography in the Maasai Mara?

This is a dedicated safari photography holiday with full days of photography from day 2 to day 7. You'll be out before sunrise & until after sunset each day, photographing in the very best light with highly skilled drivers who understand optimal vehicle positioning for photography.

Vehicle Photography

How do the specially modified vehicles work for photography?

The vehicles are specially modified to allow low-angle photography, enabling eye-level images of wildlife. Highly skilled drivers & naturalists understand how to position the vehicles optimally for photography, while opportunities to photograph off-vehicle are also available when conditions permit.

Group Benefits

What are the benefits of an 8-photographer group?

The 8-photographer limit ensures everyone has sufficient space in the modified vehicles, receives personalised guidance from Pui Hang Miles & enjoys a more relaxed photographic experience. The guide to photographer ratio of 1:5 allows for individual attention during wildlife encounters.

Photography Sessions

What big cat behaviours can I photograph?

The open savannah conditions enable photography of lions resting, hunting & interacting in prides, leopards draped across acacia branches in afternoon light, & cheetahs scanning the terrain from termite mounds. Full-day safaris maximise opportunities to capture natural behaviours during optimal lighting.

River Crossings

Will we photograph the Great Migration river crossings?

If the opportunity arises during your visit, you'll photograph the spectacle of Mara River crossings with blue wildebeest & the Nile crocodiles that lurk at crossing points. Migration timing varies & crossings cannot be guaranteed, but the itinerary is planned for peak season when crossings are most likely.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like?

You'll stay in an eco safari camp located within a genuine Maasai village for 6 nights on a full board basis. Accommodation is in safari tents with ensuite bathroom including shower & flush toilet, with single occupancy included as standard.

Photography Skills

Do I need advanced photography skills?

No advanced skills are required. Pui Hang Miles & the local guides provide experienced guidance suitable for photographers of all levels during the safari sessions. The focus is on positioning & light rather than covering distance, allowing time to develop your skills.

Cultural Experience

What cultural experiences are included?

The camp is located within a genuine Maasai village, providing opportunities to experience the Maasai people's traditional & famous culture. This authentic setting adds a unique dimension to your photography holiday beyond the wildlife encounters.

Equipment

What photography equipment should I bring?

Bring a camera suitable for wildlife photography, telephoto lenses for distant subjects, spare batteries & memory cards. The hot climate & strong sun require lens protection & adequate storage. Detailed equipment recommendations will be provided before departure.

Trip Inclusions

What's included in the trip cost?

Trip cost includes 6 nights at the eco safari camp, full board with non-alcoholic drinks, guiding by Pui Hang Miles, all safari photography sessions, park fees & transfers between Wilson Airport Nairobi & the camp. Single occupancy accommodation is included as standard.
