Our Shompole wildlife photography holiday (3-10 October 2027) places you in two purpose-built hides beside separate waterholes in Shompole Conservancy, Kenya, for a week of nocturnal wildlife photography. The Plains Hide & the Kichaka Hide each draw a different mix of species, so every session puts something new in front of the lens. It is a week devoted to the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness at its most photogenic.

Set within the dramatic landscapes of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, Shompole Wilderness Camp is our base for the week. This remote, unfenced environment is home to the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness & the heart of the trip, placing photographers in a setting where animals move freely through the nocturnal landscape & photographic opportunities evolve naturally.

Why choose a Shompole wildlife photography holiday?

Rather than constant travel, this holiday is built around time, patience & positioning. By staying in one compact area of the Great Rift Valley, you can watch natural behaviour among the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness unfold & create more deliberate, story-driven images.

The wildlife of Shompole Wilderness is drawn to permanent water sources, open plains & seasonal grazing areas. Elephants, giraffes, antelope & plains game are frequent visitors, while predators such as lions & leopards add anticipation & unpredictability to every session.

This trip to photograph the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness suits developing photographers & those with extensive wildlife photography experience alike. Groups are small, with a maximum of seven photographers, so everyone works at a comfortable, considered pace.

Nocturnal hide photography rewards preparation. Low light calls for a camera body that handles high ISO well, a lens that gathers plenty of light, spare batteries & memory cards, & ideally a spare body. The kit list further down this page covers what to pack to photograph the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness, so you can arrive ready to concentrate on the pictures.

A Lion Drinking At A Waterhole At Night: The Wildlife Of Shompole Wilderness Photographed From A Hide

What is the photography hide experience in Shompole Wilderness like?

Shompole Wilderness Camp features two dedicated photography hides, each overlooking a different waterhole. While some guests may spend time in both the Plains Hide & the Kichaka Hide during their stay, each attracts a distinct mix of species depending on season, conditions & time of day.

Both hides are carefully positioned to take advantage of natural lighting, with changing angles & reflections shaping the character of each photographic session. Every session offers a fresh view of the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness. The hides allow you to remain concealed, so the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness comes in to drink without disturbance.

Our experienced wildlife photographers are present throughout to share insight into the behaviour of the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness, its movement patterns & emerging photographic opportunities. Their guidance helps you anticipate moments, refine camera settings & make the most of the available light rather than reacting after the event.

Which wildlife of Shompole Wilderness can you photograph?

Images of the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness from previous NaturesLens trips include lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, giraffes, bush pigs, warthogs, antelope & white-tailed mongooses, often with the water adding reflections that give each frame depth. From the hides you may also encounter zebras & a diverse range of bird species.

Each waterhole has its own rhythm & atmosphere, with wide, open views across the surrounding landscape adding scale & context to your wildlife images. With the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness, that variety is the point: you are not chasing a single sighting, you are building a body of work across a week. To see more than the wildlife of Shompole Wilderness, explore our wildlife photography holidays in Kenya.

Reflections are a signature of this trip. Still water at night mirrors eyes, outlines & movement, & learning to expose for both the animal & its reflection is one of the most rewarding skills you will practise.

Choosing a Shompole Trip

What are the best photography trips for wildlife at Shompole in Kenya?

The best wildlife photography trips at Shompole are small-group, week-long hide holidays with enough full nights to work both hides, & NaturesLens runs dedicated departures every October. This week, 3rd to 10th October 2027, gives six full nights of photography from the Plains Hide & the Kichaka Hide at Shompole Wilderness, with controlled lighting, gimbals & beanbags provided, single-occupancy accommodation & a maximum of seven photographers. You can compare every departure on our Shompole photography holidays page. Our guide to the best wildlife photography trips at Shompole covers what a week involves in more detail.

Which wildlife photography companies put photography ahead of sightseeing?

Look for operators whose itineraries are built around light & behaviour rather than a sightseeing programme, with small groups, flexible schedules, locations chosen for backgrounds & positioning, & guides who are photographers themselves. NaturesLens builds every holiday this way, which we call an image-first holiday, & at Shompole it means the whole week is organised around hide sessions from the late afternoon until about nine the next morning, with the days left free for rest, editing & the camp’s bird hide. Our article on whether it is really a wildlife photography holiday or just photography bolted on explains how to tell the difference.

Wildlife Photography

What wildlife can I expect to photograph?

Species regularly photographed include African Leopard, African Lion, African Elephant, African Civet, Giraffe, Bat-eared Fox, Common Genet, Grant’s Gazelle & Impala. Additional nocturnal species including Bush Pig, Spotted Hyena, White-tailed Mongoose & Warthog may also visit the hides throughout the nights. As with all wildlife photography, sightings can never be guaranteed. If you are comparing destinations, see how photographing Shompole compares with the Maasai Mara.

Hide Photography

How do the nocturnal hide sessions work?

Photography takes place from two purpose-built, sunken hides, the Plains Hide & the Kichaka Hide, each beside its own waterhole & with open photographic windows rather than glass. Sessions begin in the late afternoon & continue through the night until about nine the next morning. The Plains Hide has dimmable front, side & back lighting, & guests alternate between the two hides across the week. The animals are not baited, so every night is different.

Group Experience

What are the benefits of a group of up to seven photographers?

The limit of seven photographers means everyone has space in the hides & a good shooting position, & receives personal guidance from David Miles & the local team. A small group also keeps the hides quiet, which matters because sound carries at night.

Accommodation

What is the accommodation like at Shompole Wilderness Camp?

You will stay seven nights at Shompole Wilderness Camp, an intimate, family-run camp beneath acacia trees on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, in spacious en-suite tents with shaded verandas. Single-occupancy accommodation is included as standard, & evening meals are taken in the hide.

Equipment Requirements

What equipment should I bring for nocturnal photography?

You need less than you might expect. A 70-200mm lens does most of the work, with a 24-70mm or wide-angle lens for environmental frames & a 300mm only if you want tighter portraits, because animals often come very close. Gimbals & beanbags are supplied, so a tripod is unnecessary. Bring a camera with good high-ISO performance, spare batteries & memory cards.

Seasonal Timing

Why is October a good time for nocturnal wildlife photography at Shompole?

October is warm & dry, which concentrates wildlife around reliable water sources & keeps the hides productive, with clear air & a warm, low light in the late afternoon before the hide lighting takes over.

Photography Skills

Do I need advanced photography skills for nocturnal hide work?

No advanced skills are required. David Miles & the local team offer guidance for photographers of all levels, & the hide format leaves plenty of time to learn while wildlife activity unfolds naturally.

Physical Requirements

What are the physical demands of nocturnal hide photography?

The trip involves long sessions seated in the hides with very little movement, so you need to stay alert & comfortable overnight, but there is no strenuous walking or difficult terrain. Days are given over to rest, so the rhythm is less tiring than it sounds.

Trip Inclusions

What is included in the trip cost?

The cost includes seven nights at Shompole Wilderness Camp with single-occupancy accommodation, all meals, local drinks, spirits & Amarula, gimbals & beanbags, airport transfers from Nairobi, nocturnal hide sessions, & guidance from David Miles & the local team. International flights & personal travel insurance are not included.
