Lions of the Serengeti Photography Safari

The Lobo Valley sits in the far north of the Serengeti, a region of granite kopjes, seasonal riverbeds & open plains that most safari itineraries never reach. During the dry season the grass burns down to a few inches, stripping away cover & pushing predators into the open where the light does the rest of the work. The kopjes themselves rise out of the plains like islands, offering shade, vantage points & denning sites, & it’s around these formations that much of the photography here happens. Dust hangs in the low evening air, & the heat of the day settles wildlife into predictable rhythms that repeat, session after session.

This is lion & leopard country in the truest sense. The African lion prides resident to Lobo hunt at dawn & dusk, when the light is low & warm & the grass throws long shadows across the plains, & because these prides hold territory here rather than passing through, you’re often working the same individuals across consecutive mornings. The African leopard population uses the rocky kopjes & fringing woodland throughout the day, resting on exposed branches or rock ledges where the elevation gives a clean, uncluttered background. Because sightings are repeatable rather than one-off, there’s time to work an individual leopard properly, adjusting position, waiting out poor light, & returning to the same animal the following day if the first session didn’t deliver.

The trip is built around vehicle-based sessions with extended field time rather than fixed drive slots, which matters when a pride is mid-hunt or a leopard has just moved position & the light is about to turn. Groups are capped at seven photographers, each with their own vehicle space, so there’s no competing for the window seat or the clean angle. David leads every departure, & having run this itinerary annually since 2025, the logistics around vehicle positioning, timing & camp routine have been refined specifically around what the predator activity in this valley actually requires. Ethical distance is maintained throughout, with sightings approached on the animals’ terms rather than pushed for a closer frame.

What you come home with from Lobo Valley is a body of work built on repetition rather than luck: a lion cub testing its footing against a pride member in first light, a leopard descending a kopje at dusk with the rock still holding the day’s heat in the frame, a hunt sequence worked from position rather than glimpsed in passing. These aren’t grab shots taken from a passing vehicle. They’re images built from time spent with animals that hold territory here, & that’s a different kind of photograph to bring home.
