Atlantic Rainforest

NaturesLens visits Atlantic Rainforest on small-group wildlife photography holidays in Brazil, with time here planned around Amethyst Woodstar, Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, Azure-shouldered Tanager, Black-cheeked Gnateater & Black-throated Mango rather than general sightseeing. Current itineraries using Atlantic Rainforest include Birds of Brazil, with photography shaped around boat-based, flight, garden & close-up & night or low-light photography sessions. The Atlantic Rainforest, or Mata Atlântica, once stretched almost continuously along Brazil’s eastern seaboard, from the northeast down through the southern states, running parallel to the coast & climbing inland across steep, mist-shrouded escarpments. Though heavily fragmented today, surviving tracts persist as a mosaic of lowland forest, montane cloud forest, & coastal lowland habitat, often within striking distance of major cities yet retaining a strikingly humid, densely vegetated character shaped by high rainfall & dramatic topography. This patchwork of remnant forest, much of it now protected, forms one of the most biologically distinct regions in South America, harbouring extraordinary levels of endemism found nowhere else on the continent. Birdlife here is dominated by a dazzling array of tanagers, with Green-headed, Red-necked, Gilt-edged, Brassy-breasted, Azure-shouldered, & Golden-chevroned Tanagers bringing vivid colour to the mixed-species flocks that move through the canopy. Hummingbirds are equally well represented, from the diminutive Amethyst Woodstar & Glittering-bellied Emerald to the iridescent Brazilian Ruby, Violet-capped Woodnymph, & Saw-billed Hermit, all exploiting the forest’s rich flowering understory. Toucans & their relatives add further spectacle, with Channel-billed, Red-breasted, Spot-billed, & the threatened Saffron Toucanet foraging noisily through fruiting trees, while Blonde-crested & Yellow-fronted Woodpeckers work the trunks. More elusive species reward patient searching: the strange, cryptic Atlantic Royal Flycatcher, ground-dwelling Black-cheeked Gnateater, secretive Tawny-browed Owl, & the extraordinary, ornately plumed Swallow-tailed Manakin, whose complex courtship displays are a highlight for visiting birders.
