Apollo at Rila Monastery area

The forested foothills surrounding Rila Monastery, sitting at around 1,100m with Bulgaria's highest peaks rising beyond, offer a striking backdrop for photographing the Apollo butterfly, a species found throughout the Rila range and its high cirques. July visits give the best chance of finding these butterflies settled among the vegetation of the lower slopes, monastery spires and mountain scenery combining in the background. This area is one of the key sites visited during the Bulgarian Mountain Butterfly Macro holiday, where the contrast between historic architecture and high-altitude wilderness makes for a memorable setting. Patience among the foothill meadows here should reward photographers with good views of this striking species against a genuinely unique Bulgarian landscape.
