Azure-winged Magpie at Extremadura

Extremadura's dehesa landscape—those open expanses of holm oak shaped by centuries of low-intensity farming—offers a fitting backdrop for photographing the Azure-winged Magpie. This corner of western Spain, hard against the Portuguese border, remains refreshingly undeveloped and sparsely populated, qualities that translate into calmer, less disturbed conditions for fieldwork. Visiting in April, as guests do on the Birds of Extremadura holiday, gives photographers the chance to work this terrain during its most productive stretch.
