Common Eider at Varanger

Out at the far northeastern edge of Norway, where the Varanger Peninsula's treeless tundra meets the Barents Sea, Common Eiders gather along the wind-scoured coastal cliffs and open fjords well above the Arctic Circle. April visitors joining Winter Wildlife of Arctic Varanger will find this stark, exposed coastline an excellent vantage point for observing the species against a raw, elemental Arctic backdrop. The open fjords offer clear sightlines, making this stretch of coast a rewarding stop for building up a portfolio of eider images amid the peninsula's characteristically bleak scenery. Dress for the wind, though, as the landscape here offers little in the way of shelter.
