About this species

It holds cultural & religious significance in Bhutan & Tibet, where it is revered as a symbol of longevity & good fortune.

Best time

Winter months from November to February offer excellent opportunities when the cranes migrate to lower valleys in Bhutan & Arunachal Pradesh. Early morning light provides soft, warm tones that complement the birds' contrasting black & white plumage.

Approach

Position yourself low to the ground to capture eye-level shots that emphasise the crane's stature & the surrounding wetland habitat. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm to photograph the birds without disturbing their natural behaviour, particularly during feeding & courtship displays. Focus on capturing the birds during their elaborate dancing rituals, which provide dynamic & visually compelling compositions.
