About this species
The blue sheep, also known as the bharal, is a bovid native to the high mountain ranges of Central Asia, including the Himalayas & the Tibetan Plateau. Despite its common name, it is not a true sheep, sharing characteristics with both sheep & goats. It is a primary prey species for the snow leopard & plays an important ecological role in alpine ecosystems.
Blue sheep inhabit steep rocky slopes, alpine meadows & open grasslands at elevations between 3,000 & 5,500 metres, typically in the Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau & surrounding mountain ranges of Central Asia.

Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon light is ideal for photography, with October to March being the best months when blue sheep gather in larger herds & their blue-grey coats contrast well against snow-dusted terrain.
Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to photograph blue sheep from a safe distance without disturbing their natural behaviour. Scout rocky cliff faces & steep terrain early in the morning when herds are most active & the light is soft & directional. Wear neutral, muted colours to blend into the rocky landscape & move slowly & deliberately to avoid startling the herd before you have secured your shots.
