Species profile

About this species

The California Sea Lion is a highly intelligent & social pinniped native to the western coast of North America, recognised by its sleek body, tan to dark brown colouring, & prominent sagittal crest in adult males. They are extremely vocal & gregarious animals, often gathering in large, noisy colonies on rocky shores, piers, & sandy beaches. Males can reach up to 300 kg, making them considerably larger than females, & they are well known for their agility both in water & on land.

Habitat

California Sea Lions are found along the Pacific coastline of North America, favouring rocky shores, sandy beaches, harbours, & offshore islands. They are commonly seen hauled out on man-made structures such as piers & buoys, particularly in California, Oregon, & Washington. They forage in coastal & offshore waters, diving to significant depths in search of fish, squid, & other prey.

Best time

Early morning light offers the softest & most flattering conditions, reducing harsh shadows on the animals' dark coats. The breeding season from May to August provides the most dynamic & varied behaviour to photograph, including territorial displays & pup interactions. Winter months also offer excellent opportunities as large numbers haul out on docks & rocky outcrops.

Approach

Position yourself low to the ground or at water level to achieve compelling, eye-level compositions that convey the animal's natural behaviour & scale. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the action when capturing sea lions leaping, swimming, or interacting with one another. Patience is essential - arrive early & observe the colony quietly from a respectful distance to anticipate interesting social interactions & avoid disturbing the animals.
