About this species
The European Roller is a striking, crow-sized bird belonging to the roller family Coraciidae, renowned for its vivid turquoise-blue & chestnut plumage. It breeds across southern & central Europe, western Asia, and parts of North Africa, migrating to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter. The species is named for its dramatic rolling & tumbling aerial display performed during courtship.
The European Roller favours open, warm landscapes such as dry grasslands, Mediterranean scrubland, open woodland edges, farmland with scattered trees, and river valleys with sandy banks suitable for nesting.

Photography notes
Early morning during the breeding season from late May through July offers the best opportunities, as birds are most active & vocal. The golden hour light at dawn is ideal for capturing the vivid colours of the plumage.
Position yourself near known perch sites such as dead trees, telephone poles or fence posts where rollers habitually return after hunting sorties - patience at these spots will reward you with clean, unobstructed shots. Use a long telephoto lens of at least 400mm to maintain a respectful distance & avoid disturbing the bird, as they can be wary of close approach. Shoot in the early morning light when the low-angled sun brings out the full iridescence of the bird's turquoise & chestnut tones, and be ready for fast burst shooting to capture flight & diving behaviour.
