About this species
The Common Kingfisher is a small, vividly coloured bird found across Europe, Asia & North Africa. It is instantly recognisable by its brilliant blue-green upperparts, orange underparts & dagger-like bill, which it uses to catch fish with remarkable precision. Despite its striking appearance, it can be surprisingly difficult to spot as it perches motionless above slow-moving rivers & streams before diving at speed.
Common Kingfishers are typically found along slow-moving or still freshwater habitats such as rivers, streams, canals, lakes & ponds with clear water. They favour bankside vegetation & overhanging branches that provide hunting perches close to the water surface.

Early morning light during spring & summer offers the best combination of soft, warm light & active feeding behaviour. Winter can also be rewarding as bare branches provide cleaner perches & the birds are more visible without foliage.
Position yourself low to the water and use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the kingfisher in flight or mid-dive. Scout regular perches in advance and pre-focus on a favourite branch to maximise your chances of a sharp, well-composed shot. Use a long telephoto lens of 400mm or more and remain patient & still, as kingfishers are easily disturbed by sudden movement or noise.
