About this species
The Great Northern Diver is a large diving bird with striking black & white plumage during the breeding season, featuring a distinctive chequered back pattern & deep red eyes. It is an expert swimmer & diver, capable of pursuing fish to considerable depths. Known for its haunting, wailing calls, it breeds on freshwater lakes in northern regions & winters along coastal waters.
Breeds on large, clear freshwater lakes in boreal & subarctic regions. Winters on sheltered coastal bays, sea lochs & estuaries, favouring areas with clean, relatively shallow water for diving.

Early morning light in summer on breeding lakes in Scotland, Iceland or Canada offers the best conditions. Winter months along British & Irish coastlines provide reliable sightings of birds in their grey & white non-breeding plumage.
Approach slowly by kayak or low boat to avoid disturbing the bird & get close to the water surface for more compelling compositions. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the bird mid-dive or as it surfaces with a catch. In winter plumage on coastal estuaries, look for birds fishing in sheltered bays where the light & background offer clean, uncluttered shots.
