About this species
The Black Guillemot is a medium-sized seabird belonging to the auk family, recognised by its striking black plumage, vivid red feet & bright white wing patches during the breeding season. In winter, the bird moults to a mottled grey & white appearance, though the white wing patches remain visible. It is typically found in coastal waters of the North Atlantic & Arctic regions, often nesting in rocky crevices & boulder shores.
Rocky coastlines, sea cliffs, harbour walls & boulder shores in northern & arctic regions. Black Guillemots favour inshore coastal waters rather than the open ocean, often seen in sheltered bays, sea lochs & around offshore islands where rocky crevices provide suitable nesting sites.

Late spring to early summer (May to July) during the breeding season offers the best opportunities, when birds are in full black breeding plumage & actively returning to nest sites with fish. Early morning light provides softer, warmer tones & the birds tend to be most active at this time.
Position yourself low to the water's edge to capture eye-level shots that emphasise the bird's vivid red feet & white wing patches against the dark plumage. Focus on rocky harbours & jetties where Black Guillemots are accustomed to human presence, allowing closer approaches for detailed portraits. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/1000s to freeze the bird's movement when it surfaces with fish, as these moments make for compelling & dynamic images.
