About this species
The impala is a medium-sized antelope native to eastern & southern Africa, renowned for its speed & agility. It is characterised by its reddish-brown coat, slender build, & the distinctive black stripes on its rump & tail. Male impalas carry long, lyre-shaped horns & are commonly seen herding groups of females across open savannah landscapes.
Impalas are typically found in open woodlands, savannah grasslands, & the edges of bushveld across eastern & southern Africa, often near permanent water sources. They favour areas with a mix of grasses for grazing & shrubs for browsing & cover.

Photography notes
Early morning & late afternoon during the golden hours offer the best light for photography. The dry season - particularly June to October - is ideal as vegetation is sparse, improving visibility & drawing animals to water sources.
Position yourself low to the ground to capture impalas at eye level, which creates a more engaging & intimate composition. During the rut, focus on the males as they chase & spar with rivals, offering dramatic action shots full of energy & motion. Use a telephoto lens of at least 300mm to maintain a respectful distance while still achieving tight, detailed portraits of these alert animals.
