About this species
The Pygmy Cormorant is a small waterbird found across eastern Europe & western Asia, notable for its compact size & rich chestnut-brown plumage during the breeding season. It frequents freshwater wetlands & is one of the smallest members of the cormorant family. Outside the breeding season, its plumage becomes duller & more uniform, making identification more challenging.
Freshwater lakes, rivers, marshes & reed beds, particularly in lowland areas with dense emergent vegetation & overhanging trees used for roosting & nesting.

Photography notes
Early morning during the breeding season from April to June offers the best light & most active behaviour, particularly when birds are displaying or tending to nests in reed beds.
Position yourself low to the water's surface to achieve a pleasing perspective & to blur distracting backgrounds. Focus on wetland areas at dawn when the birds are actively fishing & the soft light enhances their plumage colours. Use a telephoto lens of at least 400mm to avoid disturbing the birds & to capture fine feather detail from a respectful distance.
