About this species
The Red-throated Diver is the smallest of the diver family, recognised by its distinctive reddish-brown throat patch in breeding plumage & its upward-tilted bill. It breeds on small freshwater lochs & pools across northern Europe & the Arctic, wintering along coastal waters. In flight it appears hunchbacked with rapid wingbeats, often calling with a distinctive wailing cry.
Breeds on small, shallow freshwater lochs & boggy moorland pools in northern Scotland, Scandinavia & the Arctic. Winters in sheltered coastal waters, sea lochs, estuaries & offshore bays around the British Isles & western Europe.

Photography notes
Late April to June for breeding plumage on northern lochs, or October to March for wintering birds on sheltered coastal bays & estuaries. Early morning offers calm water & soft light for the clearest reflections.
Approach coastal wintering birds slowly from a low angle to achieve eye-level shots, using a long telephoto lens of at least 500mm for frame-filling images. On breeding lochs, set up a hide well in advance to avoid disturbing nesting birds & wait patiently for natural behaviours such as preening or fish carrying. In calm, overcast light the grey & white plumage renders well without harsh shadows, so avoid bright midday sun for the most flattering results.
