One of the Brown Bears of Hokkaido stood in a river - the main subject of the NaturesLens Brown Bears of Hokkaido Photography Tour

Hokkaido's wild brown bears (Ursus arctos yesoensis), known as Ezo brown bears, are Japan's largest land predators & a unique subspecies found exclusively in Hokkaido's wilderness. These magnificent omnivores, slightly smaller than mainland grizzlies but significantly larger than Honshu's black bears, thrive in the island's forested mountains & coastal regions, particularly in the UNESCO-listed Shiretoko Peninsula.

With an estimated population of 3,000, they play a vital ecological role & hold deep cultural significance for the Ainu people, who revere them as sacred Kamuy spirits. The bears' most remarkable behavior includes their autumn salmon fishing along Shiretoko's rivers & coastlines, creating world-class wildlife viewing opportunities. While protected, they face conservation challenges from habitat loss & human conflicts.

Prime viewing occurs September-October when they actively forage before winter hibernation, with boat tours along Shiretoko's coast & guided forest treks offering the best observation opportunities. For wildlife photographers, encountering Hokkaido's brown bears represents one of Asia's most authentic & thrilling wilderness experiences, showcasing nature's grandeur in Japan's northern frontier.
