Wildlife Photography Holidays & Tours in Japan
Japan is one of the destinations for our Asian wildlife photography tours.
NaturesLens runs winter wildlife photography holidays in Japan, led by David Miles, Pui Hang Miles & Ian Roberts. The trip is built around Hokkaido’s Red-crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Steller’s Sea Eagles & White-tailed Eagles, with Japanese Macaques on mainland Japan. The current trip is Japanese Wildlife in Winter (14 nights). Groups are limited to six photographers, & single occupancy is included. A winter programme built through experience Our Japan itinerary has evolved over many winters. Returning to the same areas has helped us judge where extra time is useful & how to connect locations without losing productive sessions. David describes the process in his account of Japan’s winter wildlife photography. The priority is repeat opportunities with productive subjects, not adding a stop to lengthen a species list. Cranes, swans, sea eagles & macaques In eastern Hokkaido, Red-crowned Cranes, Whooper Swans, Steller’s Sea Eagles & White-tailed Eagles offer winter opportunities shaped by snow, water, coastal light & changing weather, with boat-based eagle sessions & repeat visits to respond to behaviour. On mainland Japan, Japanese Macaques offer a different pace, with social behaviour, expressions, snow & steam. Guidance covers exposure in snow, autofocus for moving birds, positioning, composition & adapting to changing light. Read our guest reviews or how NaturesLens designs its photography holidays. We explore wildlife photography in Japan in greater depth in Why Photographers Are Drawn to Japan. Japan offers outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography, with the chance to photograph species such as Blakiston’s Fish Owl, Ezo Brown Bear, Ezo Red Fox, Ezo Sika Deer, Japanese Macaque, Red-crowned Crane, Steller’s Sea Eagle, Whooper Swan, White-tailed Eagle & Long-tailed Tit. These highlighted species represent only a small part of the wildlife found across the area, with many more species present depending on habitat, region & seasonal conditions. Trips in Japan are led by our team of photographers, including Ian Roberts, Pui Hang Miles, & David Miles, offering experienced guidance throughout.
