Early April on the Varanger Peninsula is about being in exactly the right place at the right time. This is when the Arctic begins to shift – winter still holds the landscape, but birdlife surges back to the coast. The journey runs from Kirkenes to Vardø & out onto Hornøya, placing guests in one of the most productive wildlife photography locations in Europe, all under Alison’s experienced guidance. The focus is simple: maximise time in the field, work the light, & return home with a portfolio that reflects the raw, northern character of this coastline.
At the heart of the trip are the Arctic ducks. Steller’s Eider is the headline species, & this is one of the best locations anywhere to photograph them well. Alongside them, King Eiders add colour & impact, often feeding at close range in sheltered harbours. Long-tailed Ducks bring elegance & movement to the water, while Purple Sandpipers work the rocky edges, offering characterful, intimate moments. These encounters are unhurried & repeatable, giving guests time to refine angles, backgrounds & behaviour with Alison’s experienced guidance throughout.
Hornøya adds a completely different energy. Here, seabird colonies are building, & the cliffs are alive with movement. Atlantic Puffins arrive in increasing numbers, sharing the island with Common Guillemots, Brünnich’s Guillemots, Razorbills & Black-legged Kittiwakes. It’s loud, chaotic & endlessly photogenic. With multiple sessions on the island, Alison ensures there is time to move beyond simple sightings & into more considered photography – flight work, interactions, & clean compositions that stand out.
Then there is the Mountain Hare hide – & this is genuinely something special. This isn’t a single visit; there are two dedicated evenings here, giving guests the time & space to really get it right. Working at close range with hares still in their white winter coats, this is all about light, timing & simplicity. Backlit fur, breath in cold air, movement across clean snow – it’s a completely different pace & style of photography, & often where some of the most striking images of the trip are made. Crucially, this hide has a proven track record at the very highest level, consistently producing images that go on to win & place in major international competitions, including the Sony World Photography Awards (Natural World & Wildlife category winner, 2026), Close-up Photographer of the Year, European Photography Awards, ND Awards & the Monochrome Awards. Alongside this, the itinerary remains flexible to conditions, including opportunities for Northern Lights on clear evenings, creating a week that delivers variety, contrast & exceptional photographic potential.

The following is the proposed itinerary for this photography holiday, it should be considered provisional & subject to change.
- Day 1 - Arrival into Kirkenes, optional local photography session, possible Northern Lights - transfer to Kirkenes - overnight Kirkenes
- Day 2 - Scenic drive along Varangerfjord with wildlife stops, afternoon session on Hornøya - transfer to Vardø - overnight Vardø
- Day 3 - Morning Hornøya session, afternoon Arctic ducks around Vardø, evening Backlit Mountain Hare hide - overnight Vardø
- Day 4 - Båtsfjord harbour (AM), Kongsfjord harbour (PM), possible Northern Lights - overnight Vardø
- Day 5 - Final Hornøya session, Ekkerøy bird cliffs, evening Backlit Mountain Hare hide - overnight Vardø
- Day 6 - Vadsø harbour photography, return journey to Kirkenes with wildlife stops, possible Northern Lights - overnight Kirkenes
- Day 7 - transfer to Kirkenes Airport
