About this species
The Eastern Festoon is a striking butterfly found across parts of south-eastern Europe & the Middle East, characterised by its boldly patterned wings of yellow, black, red & blue markings. It belongs to the family Papilionidae & is closely related to the Southern Festoon. The species is associated with its larval foodplant, birthwort (Aristolochia species), upon which females lay their eggs.
Rocky limestone hillsides, scrubby slopes & woodland edges where Aristolochia host plants grow, typically at low to mid elevations in south-eastern Europe & south-western Asia

Late spring to early summer, particularly April to June, during warm sunny mornings when adults are basking
Approach slowly & from a low angle when the butterfly is basking on vegetation, as sudden movements will cause it to take flight. Use a macro lens or close-focusing zoom to capture the intricate wing patterns, aiming for a wide aperture to separate the subject from the background. Visit known colonies on warm, sunny mornings when individuals are less active & more likely to remain settled for extended periods.
