Species profile

About this species

The Great Banded Grayling is a large butterfly found across central & southern Europe, recognised by its striking dark brown wings adorned with a broad white band and small eyespots. It is one of the larger members of the Satyrinae subfamily, with a wingspan that can reach up to 70mm. The species is known for its cryptic resting behaviour, often settling on tree bark or rocky surfaces where its patterning provides excellent camouflage.

Habitat

Dry, open woodland edges, scrubby hillsides, rocky slopes & sun-drenched clearings, particularly in areas with oak woodland across central & southern Europe.

Field notes

Photography notes

Best time

Mid-summer, particularly July & August, during warm sunny afternoons when individuals are most active & basking. Early morning can also be productive as butterflies warm themselves & are less likely to fly off.

Approach

Approach the butterfly slowly & from a low angle to capture its wing patterns against natural backgrounds such as bark or stone. Focus on the eyespots & white banding by using a macro lens or close-up setting to reveal fine detail. Shoot during the warmest part of the day when the butterfly is most active & likely to bask with wings open, offering clear views of its upper wing surfaces.
