Species profile

About this species

The Knapweed Fritillary is a medium-sized butterfly found across central & southern Europe, extending into parts of Asia. It displays a distinctive orange & black chequered pattern on its upperwings, with a row of orange lunules on the hindwing underside. The species is strongly associated with knapweed plants, which serve as the primary larval foodplant.

Habitat

Open grasslands, flowery meadows, scrubby hillsides & woodland edges where knapweed & other nectar-rich plants are abundant, typically at low to moderate altitudes across southern & central Europe.

Best time

Late May through July is the peak flight period, with a partial second brood possible in August in warmer regions. Mid-morning to early afternoon on warm, calm days offers the best activity & feeding behaviour for photography.

Approach

Approach slowly & from downwind when the butterfly is feeding on knapweed or other flowers, as it is easily disturbed. Use a macro lens or close-focusing telephoto to capture the intricate wing patterns, shooting at eye level for the most compelling perspective. Overcast but bright conditions help reduce harsh shadows & reveal the rich colour detail on the wings.
