Best time

Early morning hours shortly after dawn offer the best activity & soft directional light. The species is most reliably photographed during the austral spring & summer months between September & January when activity & visibility are at their peak.

Approach

Position yourself near fruiting trees at forest edges where the species regularly forages, as this allows close & predictable encounters. Use a fast shutter speed of at least 1/800s to freeze movement as the bird hops between branches. The vivid blue & yellow plumage reflects light well, so overcast conditions can help reduce harsh highlights & reveal true colour.
